Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data by summarising both the pie chart regarding locations and the bar chart regarding types of dance classes across different age groups. An overview is present, highlighting the main trends such as the dominance of private studios and the shift in popular dance styles between age groups. However, some parts of the task are developed more fully than others; for instance, the interpretation of the pie chart data contains a slight misunderstanding, as the student describes the percentages as representing 'space' rather than the proportion of students attending classes in those locations. This prevents the response from achieving a higher band, as the data interpretation has minor inaccuracies. Nevertheless, key features and comparisons are correctly highlighted throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear separation into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each chart. Information and ideas are generally logically sequenced, allowing the reader to follow the main trends easily. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent repetition of phrase templates like 'Private studios provides...'. Referencing and logical progression within sentences could be smoother to avoid abrupt transitions between data points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information, but cohesive devices are occasionally overused or limited in variety, keeping the organization at a solid functional level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate main features and data points clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and descriptive phrases, such as 'most popular' and 'respectively'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies, such as using 'date' instead of 'data', 'favourite' instead of 'popular', and misinterpreting the pie chart categories as 'space'. Word form and spelling errors, such as 'repesenting' instead of 'representing', occur but generally do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student needs a wider range of precise vocabulary and fewer slips in word choice and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions successfully. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Private studios provides...') and preposition errors ('attend in the same class', 'agedn between'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the intended meaning without difficulty. A wider variety of error-free complex sentences and tighter control over grammatical patterns would be required to advance to the next level.
