Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response satisfies the word count requirement and successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by reporting the main features of both charts. The overview correctly identifies the highest and lowest points for the location of dance classes and highlights key demographic preferences for dance types. However, some aspects of the task are developed more fully than others; for instance, the details for the under-11 and 11-16 age groups are presented with some minor inaccuracies in reading the specific data values from the charts (such as stating 410 instead of approximately 450 for tap dance). The student selects and reports clear trends and comparisons, which fully meets the criteria for the lower band while showing glimpses of more detailed reporting characteristic of a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The writing has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory statement, through an overview, to detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual data sets. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the text, such as 'Overall', 'Looking at the details', and 'Turning to the remaining detail'. Nevertheless, some cohesive referencing is slightly mechanical or repetitive, and transitional phrases occasionally feel a bit rigid. Overall organisation is clear and easy to follow, successfully achieving a coherent structure throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary related to data reporting such as 'proportion', 'maximum', and various dance styles. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'kinds of dance classes young people are living in' instead of 'attending', and minor formatting issues like 'number third' and 'last postion'. Spelling is generally adequate, but some awkward phrasing and word form errors indicate that vocabulary control is still developing, placing this response firmly in the middle band for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences using subordinating conjunctions like 'while' and 'whose'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing present, such as 'These charts illustrates', 'most students... goes', and 'its decreases to 300 when comes to'. Punctuation and articles also show occasional lapses. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily grasp the intended meaning, which aligns well with the expectations of this band level.
