Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features from both the pie chart and the bar chart, while also making relevant comparisons. The overview captures the dominant trends, noting that private studios were the most popular venue and that preferences shifted across age groups for different dance types. However, some areas show signs of under-development or slight inaccuracies; for instance, the writer states that ballet classes for under-11s reached approximately '6100' (a typographical or reading error for 600) and minor details regarding age breakdowns could be further expanded. The selection of data is generally appropriate, yet deeper extension into the specific comparisons between the two age cohorts would elevate the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the venue data to the age-group statistics. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on different charts. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'While the accompanying bar garph illustrates', 'Overall', and 'In contrast'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or slightly abrupt, particularly in transitions between sentences in the third paragraph. Paragraph structure is maintained, but smoother logical bridges between the location data and the specific dance types would enhance the overall flow and organization of the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is utilized to handle the task effectively, including terms like 'proportion', 'venues', and 'categories'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'contributed the largest portion', but minor errors in word choice and spelling occur, such as writing 'garph' instead of 'graph' and using awkward phrasing like 'famous venue to held to held'. While these slips do not impede communication and the message remains clear, the presence of these lexical and spelling inaccuracies prevents the vocabulary score from reaching a higher level. A more precise control of word forms and collocations is needed for greater fluency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting relative clauses and contrasting subordinate clauses such as 'While the accompanying bar garph illustrates...'. However, there are noticeable grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'young people takes' instead of 'take', sentence fragments like 'While people above 11 were the most to attend modern dance classes.', and awkward infinitive constructions ('to held to held'). These errors in grammar and punctuation are recurrent, although they rarely impede overall communication. A greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and more careful proofreading of basic agreements and verb forms are required to improve control.
