Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on both the location of dance classes and the types of dance by age group, selecting key features such as the dominance of private studios and the popularity differences between ballet and modern dance. However, there are significant comprehension and reporting errors regarding the target demographic; the student incorrectly refers to the subjects as "adults" throughout the text, whereas the prompt clearly specifies "young people." Furthermore, some ideas are under-developed, and the overview contains inaccuracies regarding the data. To reach a higher band, the student must accurately interpret the visual data without misidentifying the subject matter and ensure all reported trends are fully supported by the provided figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, overview, pie chart details, and bar chart details. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition between paragraphs relies on repetitive phrases like "Table shows that," and referencing is occasionally unclear. Logical progression is also hindered by the misinterpretation of the data categories. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to use a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices naturally, avoiding formulaic transitions, and ensure a smoother, more logical flow of information between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary such as "constituting," "accounting," and "signifant" (though misspelled). There are some word choice and spelling errors, such as "classes attending" instead of "attended," and "signifant," but these do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, the student must demonstrate a wider range of lexical items with greater precision and stylistic awareness, while eliminating spelling mistakes and awkward collocations like "around same likelihood."

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over basic structures. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as missing articles ("Table shows that"), incorrect participle clauses ("constituting for"), and punctuation issues around introductory adverbs ("Approximately, half..."). While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they persist throughout the response. To reach a higher band, the student needs to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and improve control over prepositions and relative clauses.
