Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart illustrates us about the location of dance classes and the bar chart below demonstrates about types of dance classes currently attended by young people in Australia.

We can see from the pie chart that most of the classes are held in private studios around 48% which is the dominant location. On the other hand, only 10% of the classes are held in college based studios. In community halls,18% of the classes are held.Similarly, school halls held 24% of the teaching after school

From the bar graph,it is clear that most of the students who are under 11 take part in ballet dancing which is highest among all types with 600 students. The students of age 11-16 have little interest in ballet dancing. The amount of pupils of age 11-16 who take part in modern type of dances is around 300.The amount of students of age 11-16 was around 520.Under 11 studenst being dominant, the amount of pupils in dance classes is almost same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main parts of the visual data by reporting figures for both location types and dance class attendance across age groups, covering some key features such as the dominance of private studios and ballet classes for younger children. However, certain ideas remain under-developed or unclear, and there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the statement that 'The amount of students of age 11-16 was around 520' appears twice or refers vaguely to the modern dance category without sufficient clarity, and the concluding overview is overly brief. To move to a higher band, the response needs to extend and support all selected features more thoroughly while ensuring all numerical data is reported with complete accuracy and precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, attempting to follow a logical structure. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty and mechanical, with issues in punctuation and spacing around cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand, only' and 'Similarly, school halls'. Referencing is not always completely clear, and paragraphing could be structured more cleanly. To achieve a higher band, you should ensure a smoother progression of ideas throughout the response, use a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices without mechanical errors, and maintain accurate spacing and punctuation between sentences and clauses.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to discuss percentages and categories such as 'dominant location', 'participate', and 'dance classes'. However, the range is limited, and there are noticeable lexical and collocational infelicities, such as 'The amount of pupils' (where 'number of pupils' is required for countable nouns) and 'modern type of dances'. Spelling and word choice generally do not impede communication, but occasional errors persist. To reach the next band, you should incorporate a wider, more flexible range of less common vocabulary and precise lexical items suitable for academic data reporting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing relies on a limited range of structures, with frequent errors in basic and complex sentence forms. There are notable issues with punctuation and spacing, such as missing spaces after full stops and commas throughout the text (e.g., 'dominant location. On the other hand, only'). Furthermore, there are awkward phrasings and grammatical inaccuracies like 'The pie chart illustrates us about' and 'school halls held 24% of the teaching after school', alongside awkward absolute constructions like 'Under 11 studenst being dominant'. Frequent grammatical and punctuation errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, you need to demonstrate better control over complex sentence patterns and significantly improve punctuation and sentence boundary accuracy.
