Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by addressing both the location of dance classes and the types of dance classes by age group. A clear overview is provided, highlighting the main features such as the dominance of private studios and the varying preferences between age groups. Key data points are accurately reported and compared, such as private studios accounting for 48 percent and ballet being the most popular choice for children under 11 with 600 students. While the ideas are well extended and supported, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or repeat certain data descriptions across paragraphs, which prevents the response from reaching a higher level of development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a visible attempt to structure information logically into an introduction, an overview, and supporting body paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases like 'On the other hand' and 'Comparitively' are used awkwardly, and referencing is not always clear, leading to a somewhat choppy progression of ideas. Paragraphing is present, but the grouping of information could be managed more effectively to ensure a smoother transition between the two distinct charts presented in the prompt.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'segment', 'elevated use', 'modicum', and 'prevalent'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'schools halls used after schools', 'Comparitively community halls and college based studios is have modicum use', and spelling errors like 'uder' and 'prefrence'. These vocabulary errors occasionally detract from precision, though they do not seriously impede overall communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capability with relative clauses and comparative structures. However, there are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('college based studios is have'), missing articles ('the Modern dance', 'the second major prefrence'), and punctuation slips like missing periods and run-on sentences. These errors occur regularly alongside error-free sentences, but they rarely impede communication, placing the response firmly in this grammatical category.
