Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of both the pie chart and the table, selecting and reporting the main features, and making relevant comparisons. The writer outlines the dominant locations, such as private studios at 48% and school halls at 24%, and highlights key age-group trends for dance types, noting that ballet is most popular among children under 11 while modern dance peaks in the 11–16 age bracket. The overview is clear and sets a strong foundation for the report. However, the response tends to over-generalise or slightly misinterpret certain data points, such as stating that modern dance "is not prefered by kids under 11" when the chart clearly shows 300 students in that age group attending. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to ensure absolute accuracy when reporting data from the visual aids without overstating trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression of information, moving from an introductory summary and overview to detailed paragraphs for the pie chart and the table respectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual data sets. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as "Overall," "Moreover," "meanwhile," and "However," which helps guide the reader through the report. However, some referencing and transitional elements feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and a few cohesive links do not fully integrate the clauses smoothly, which prevents the essay from achieving a higher level of cohesion. To improve further, the writer should refine the use of referencing expressions and ensure that transitions between complex comparative statements flow more naturally without relying on formulaic connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as "breakdown," "percentage," "dominant," and specific dance styles like "ballet," "tap," and "modern." There are noticeable lexical and word-choice inaccuracies, such as "mostly famous under 11 years old kids" instead of popular among children under 11, and "modern dance have the highest number" containing a subject-verb agreement slip intertwined with lexical choice. Spelling is generally acceptable, but minor infelicities in collocation and word form appear throughout the text. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to expand their range of less common lexical items and demonstrate greater precision in word choice and stylistic collocation, avoiding awkward phrasing such as "kids under the age of 11, being the second highest compared to the 11-16 age group it has 30 more student".
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, containing frequent errors in articles, prepositions, and plurals. Examples include "attended the a town of Australia currently people attending" (awkward word order and missing prepositions), "is is evident" (typographical error and auxiliary confusion), "11 years old kids" (missing hyphenation and prepositional structure), and "30 more student" (missing plural form). Complex sentence attempts often contain structural faults that disrupt the flow. To improve, the writer must focus on sentence construction, ensuring correct verb forms, accurate article usage, and reliable subject-verb agreement while reducing basic grammatical slips.
