Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task, successfully addressing both the location of dance classes and the types of dance by age group. A clear overview is provided, highlighting the highest and lowest proportions for locations, and key features such as private studios leading at 48% and ballet being the most popular among younger children are reported accurately with data. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven; while some data points like ballet and tap are detailed, other aspects of the charts are treated more superficially. There is also a slight misinterpretation regarding the overall popularity trends when mentioning that ballet is 'common in all three categories', and some copied phrasing appears from the prompt. To reach a higher level, the response would need to fully develop all main features without any unevenness or minor inaccuracies.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement and information is logically organized into paragraphs that separate the overview, the location data, and the age group data. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', 'We can see clearly', and 'Finally'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or awkward, particularly with transitional phrases like 'Now, discussing types of dance classes by age group:' which introduce an informal, conversational tone rather than academic register. Paragraphing is present, but internal logical progression within paragraphs sometimes stumbles due to abrupt shifts between data points. To achieve a higher band, the student must employ a smoother, more sophisticated range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing remains precise throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary to handle the task, using terms such as 'proportion', 'contribution', 'participating', and 'respectively'. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'percentage', 'participation', and specific dance styles. However, lexical control is inconsistent, leading to some word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'the modern number of students' instead of 'the number of modern dance students', and awkward phrasing like 'highest contribution to dance location'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the occasional imprecise choice of words or phrasing prevents the vocabulary from reaching a higher standard. Incorporating more precise academic collocations and refining word forms would elevate this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures. There are several error-free sentences, such as 'Private studios had the highest percentage of dance class locations, while college-based studios had the smallest proportion.' However, noticeable grammar and punctuation errors are present, including punctuation flaws like stray parentheses '(modern, Tap, ballet)', fragments or run-on structures such as 'Young people in a town in Australia are currently attending', and preposition errors like 'in the loaction of dance classes'. Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded. To move up to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex structures with more consistent accuracy and flawless punctuation.
