Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on both the location of dance classes and the types of classes by age group. An overview is successfully provided in the second paragraph, highlighting key features such as private studios being the most popular location and modern dance being prominent among older youngsters. However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others. While the location data and the under-11 age group are described with specific figures, the reporting of the 11-16 age group lacks sufficient depth and comparison. To reach a higher level, the writer should ensure all data sets are explored with more thorough comparisons and fully developed supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview, followed by body paragraphs dedicated to location and types of classes respectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', and 'In addition', which help guide the reader through the text. However, some cohesion is slightly mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally clunky, such as 'the students who are under 11 appreciate to attend ballet classes'. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and ideas without relying on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'contributer', 'captivating', and 'statistics'. There are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as saying children are 'captivating to modern dance' instead of 'attracted to' or 'captivated by', and 'appreciate to attend' instead of 'enjoy attending'. Spelling and word-form errors, like the misspelling of 'contributor', do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. To improve, the writer should focus on precise word choices and correct collocations when attempting more sophisticated or less common vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, reflecting the characteristics of this band. The writer attempts various structures, such as relative clauses ('the children who are more captivating...') and participial phrases, but these attempts are often marred by grammatical errors. Examples include preposition and article slips like 'in a town of Australia' instead of 'in an Australian town', and awkward verb complementation like 'amounting to 450 of the total and who are aged...'. Punctuation errors also appear, such as the space before the full stop in '300 .'. These errors are frequent enough to cause occasional difficulty for the reader, but they rarely impede overall communication. To progress, the writer needs greater control over complex sentence patterns and improved accuracy in prepositions and verb forms.
