Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on both the locations and types of dance classes, covering the main features and making some comparisons. However, some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the statement that 'ballet dance achieve a dramatic increase by the age under 11' misinterprets the static data of the chart as a chronological trend, as the chart displays age groups rather than a progression over time. Furthermore, the details regarding the 11 to 16 age group are vague ('reveals a steady increment'). While the overview identifies that private studios are the most occupied location, the response lacks a fully extended exploration of all key comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement and attempts a logical progression, beginning with locations and moving on to class types. However, paragraphing is not utilised, with the entire text presented as a single block of writing, which hinders readability. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as the abrupt transitions between sentences ('Initially...', 'In contrast...', 'The figure shows...'). Referencing is also occasionally unclear, leaving the reader to deduce connections between the disparate statistical points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'substantially', 'largely occupied', and 'significant rise'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form throughout the text. Examples include 'currently attending in a society' instead of 'attended', 'the youngers' instead of 'young people' or 'youth', 'accquire a lot attention', and 'over 300 at modern dance sessions' where 'to 300' or 'for modern dance' would be more appropriate. These errors do not seriously impede communication but prevent the response from achieving a higher level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms attempted, such as the introductory sentence and comparative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, verb forms, and prepositions. Examples include subject-verb agreement errors ('ballet dance achieve', 'share of students... reveals'), incorrect prepositions ('by the age under 11'), and awkward passive or active voice choices ('dance classes that are currently attending'). Punctuation and sentence structures generally allow the meaning to come through, but the persistence of these grammatical slips keeps the accuracy at this level.
