Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview of the visual data and detailing both the location of dance classes and the types of dance classes by age group. Main features and key comparisons are reported accurately, such as highlighting private studios at 48% as the largest category and noting ballet's popularity among younger children compared to modern dance's popularity in the older cohort. The selection of data is relevant and well-supported, although a tendency to list figures sequentially prevents the ideas from being fully extended into higher-level comparative analysis. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements for a solid performance on this task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
There is a clear logical organization and progression throughout the response. Information is grouped sensibly, with an introductory paragraph, a general overview, a body paragraph dedicated to the pie chart data, and a final paragraph focusing on the bar chart. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader through the data, such as "Turning to the bar chart", "In contrast", and "This is followed by". Paragraphing is managed effectively, and referencing remains clear, contributing to a coherent overall arrangement that guides the reader smoothly from one visual to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as "percentage distribution", "proportion", "category", and "figure". There are occasional lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as "private studios accounts" instead of "account", and "ballet records the highest students" rather than "highest number of students". Attempts at less common vocabulary are generally successful, and while these minor word choice and agreement slips occur, they do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions effectively. However, there are persistent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ("private studios accounts", "tap dance have") and awkward prepositional use ("age between 11 to 16 has accounted for"). Complex structures are sometimes faulty, and errors in punctuation or article usage occasionally surface. While these errors do not impede understanding, they restrict the grammar score, showing that greater precision in basic agreement and clause structures is needed.
