IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart compares the distribution of dance classes by location, while the bar chart shows the information on the types of dance classes youngsters take in a town in Australia.
Overall, private studios accounted for the largest proportion, whereas the figure for the college-based studios was the lowest. Ballet-type dance was the most popular among youngsters.
The proportion for private studios was the highest, with a 48% share, followed by the school halls (after-school) at 24%. The figure for community halls and others was relatively low, with an 18% share. The remaining 10% accounted for the college-based studios (the lowest proportion).
The number of students who preferred ballet-type dance was 600 for under 11 and 300 for the age group 11-16. Tap dance had 400 students aged 11-16.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the main features of both charts, providing data for locations and dance types across age groups. However, it fails to meet the minimum word length requirement, falling short at 129 words. Furthermore, the selection of data is somewhat incomplete; while the pie chart is well-covered, the bar chart lacks full reporting for all categories (for instance, modern dance is omitted, and some figures are inaccurate, such as stating tap dance had 400 students aged 11-16 when the bar shows 420). Consequently, some ideas remain under-developed and the overview lacks a complete synthesis of the bar chart's key trends, keeping the performance at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs detailing the respective charts. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'whereas', and 'followed by', although referencing and transitions can occasionally feel mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two different graphical datasets. To reach a higher band, the logical progression could be smoother, ensuring all links between sentences feel entirely natural rather than formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'distribution', 'proportion', and 'accounted for'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though occasional word choice and data reporting inaccuracies occur (e.g., misreading specific bar values). Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. To progress further, the student should integrate a wider variety of precise phrasing and synonyms to describe statistical changes and comparisons without minor inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions effectively ('The number of students who preferred...'). There are some minor errors in grammar and punctuation, but they are infrequent and rarely impede communication, reflecting a solid partial control of the upper-intermediate band descriptors. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim to consistently produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine clause structures when reporting complex comparative data.
