Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting the main features of both visual components provided in the task. An overview is present, highlighting key trends such as the dominance of private studios and the shifting age distribution across dance styles. Data points are appropriately selected and reported accurately from the charts, such as the 48% figure for private studios and the 600 ballet participants under 11. However, some ideas tend to over-generalise or lack further extension, which keeps the response at this level. For instance, the comparison between age groups for modern dance could have been linked more cohesively to the overall narrative of youth preferences. A small portion of the text includes copied phrasing from the prompt, but the overall coverage of the visual data is solid and meets all fundamental requirements for the task type.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division of paragraphs, separating the introduction, overview, location details, and class type details. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', and 'In addition'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty. For example, the phrase 'The remaining 10% was took by college-based studio' demonstrates awkward linking and phrasing, while the phrase 'Percentage of College-based studios was the least' lacks a necessary article. Paragraphing is used adequately to structure the response, but smoother transitions between the two distinct charts would elevate the organizational flow to a higher standard.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an acceptable range of terms related to data reporting and dance classes, such as 'proportion', 'participants', 'community halls', and 'studio'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary with mixed success. There are noticeable word choice, word form, and collocation errors that occasionally affect precision, such as 'particupants' (spelling error for participants), 'was took' (incorrect lexical/grammatical collision with verb choice), and 'participants of modern was just over 300'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect a typical profile where vocabulary control lacks the polish and flexibility required for higher band levels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at comparative structures and dependent clauses. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent, with frequent basic errors. Examples include missing articles ('Percentage of College-based studios', 'The participants of modern'), incorrect passive verb forms ('was took by'), subject-verb agreement issues ('The participants of modern was'), and awkward prepositions or noun modifiers ('by under 11 age'). These errors require some effort from the reader to parse, though they rarely obscure the intended meaning entirely. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to eliminate recurrent errors in articles and verb morphology while increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences.
