Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on both the pie chart concerning the location of dance classes and the bar chart regarding types of dance classes by age group. An overview is present at the beginning, noting that private studios account for the largest proportion while college-based studios have the least. However, some aspects of the task are developed more fully than others. For instance, the details for the bar graph are somewhat under-developed, focusing heavily on ballet and modern dance while omitting tap dance entirely. Furthermore, there are minor inaccuracies in reporting data, such as stating modern dance is occupied by '530 educatee' rather than reading the precise figures directly. To reach a higher level, the response should ensure all major trends and data series from the charts are fully covered and balanced without omissions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, moving from an introductory statement to an overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing the pie chart and then the bar chart. Cohesive devices such as 'From an overall analysis', 'To expound the chart in detail', and 'As further scrutiny reveals' are employed to guide the reader through the data. However, referencing and cohesion can at times feel mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the transition phrases 'approaching to learn dance by masses contributes to 18%' and 'represent at only 10%'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. To achieve a higher band, the transitions between sentences should be smoother and more natural, avoiding awkward mechanical links while maintaining a clear and logical progression of ideas throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the general meaning and attempting some less common lexical items such as 'proportion', 'subsequently', and 'scrutiny'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word forms. Examples include 'dance coachings', 'loactions', 'educatee', and the unidiomatic phrase 'start dance journey ny individuals'. There are also occasional awkward phrasings like 'are approaching to learn dance by masses contributes to 18%'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations slightly impede smooth communication. To improve to a higher band, the student needs to use a wider and more precise range of vocabulary with accurate word forms and native-like collocations, avoiding non-standard terms such as 'educatee' or 'coachings'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and comparative structures. There are several instances of grammatical errors, such as article misuse ('the large proportion', 'the college-based studios have least proportion', 'the ballet dance is highly registered'), preposition errors ('performed in the school halls by teenagers' where 'at' or 'in' might relate differently, or 'under 11 years students'), and agreement issues. However, these errors in grammar and punctuation rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. To move up to a higher band, the student should aim to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise better control over articles, prepositions, and noun-modifier agreement.
