IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given data demonstrates the information about the location and types of dance schooling the young Aussies are currently attending in a town. I will explain it briefly.

In detail, I explain the location of dance classes which states that about 48% of the total lpercentage is occupied by private studio. This is a massive amount of proportion occupied by any of the given location. The second highest percentage is of school hall which is about 24%. Community hall and other has third highest ratio of the occupied area. It is about 18%. The least proportion is of college-based studios which is about 10% of the total percentage.

Secondally, the types of dance classes have various number of pupils those are under the age of 11 and above 11 which continue to 16. If we look at the students those who are under the age of 11 approximately 600 students attend the ballet dance class which is the massive by any class. About 470 pupils attended the tap class approximately. The students of age 11 to 16 attend the modern class very well about 500 students approximately. 400 students attended the tap class. The pupils under the age of 11 and above have the same number of attended pupils about 300 respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt only partially and contains unnecessary personal remarks such as 'I will explain it briefly', which detracts from an academic tone. While the student attempts to cover both charts, the selection of data is erratic and lacks a clear overview or synthesis. For instance, the discussion of the location chart correctly identifies private studios as the highest at 48%, but the description of the dance types is disjointed and imprecise. The writer struggles to accurately report the figures for the age groups, misreading or approximating values inconsistently (such as '470 pupils' instead of roughly 450 for tap, and missing several key comparisons). Ideas are left under-developed and lack a comprehensive summary of the main trends across the two visual datasets, keeping the response at a basic level of task completion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response shows some logical organisation, with an introduction followed by body paragraphs dedicated to each of the two charts. Information is arranged with basic progression, and the writer attempts to use cohesive devices such as 'In detail', 'The second highest percentage', and 'Secondally'. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes mechanical or awkward. For example, the transition 'Secondally' contains a spelling error and introduces the second paragraph abruptly. Paragraphing is present and separates the charts appropriately, but the overall flow feels disjointed due to repetitive sentence structures and a lack of sophisticated cohesive links connecting the data points together smoothly. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure clearer logical relationships between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The lexical resource used is adequate for the task but limited in range and precision. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'proportion', 'occupied', and 'community hall', but also relies on repetitive phrasing and basic descriptors. There are several noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'dance schooling' instead of 'dance classes', 'young Aussies' (which is too informal for an Academic task), and the misspelling 'Secondally'. Furthermore, phrases like 'massive amount of proportion' and 'number of attended pupils' demonstrate a lack of collocation control. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted vocabulary range that prevents the writing from achieving a higher level of precision and natural style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and straightforward subject-verb-object patterns. When the student attempts more complex structures, such as relative clauses ('the students those who are under the age of 11'), the execution is frequently faulty and awkward. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with prepositions, articles, and redundant phrasing (e.g., 'the types of dance classes have various number of pupils those are under the age of 11 and above 11 which continue to 16'). Pluralisation and subject-verb agreement also present issues in places. These frequent errors require the reader to decode the meaning and occasionally cause difficulty, which is characteristic of this grammatical level.
