Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart presents the recent data of the location of the dance classes in percentage, while the bar graph illustrates the comparative anyalysis on the basis of age of young people attending the three types of dances( ballet, tap and modern), in a town of Australia.

Overall, first ranked for its location are private studios, with college based at last. Whereas, most liked and disliked dance type are ballet and modern among different age groups.

In terms of location, the most popular area among the individuals are the private studios, occupying nearly half of the total attendees. While the second ranked are school halls(after school) consisting of almost a quarter learners, with community halls and others with just 18% accomodators. Lastly, the least favoured are college based studios with minor percentage of 10%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting both the location of dance classes and the types of dance across different age groups. An overview is provided, highlighting the main trends such as private studios being the most common location and ballet/modern differing by age. However, some parts of the response are slightly underdeveloped or contain inaccurate generalisations; for instance, the overview claims that ballet is the most liked and modern the most disliked, which contradicts the bar chart showing modern as the most popular for older teens. To reach a higher band, the overview needs to accurately capture all major trends without factual discrepancies, and data points should be more fully integrated to support comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into an introduction, overview, location body paragraph, and dance types body paragraph. Information is logically sequenced, and paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual data sources. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or slightly clumsy, as seen with transitions like 'Whereas, most liked and disliked dance type...' and 'Lastly, the least favoured are college based studios with minor percentage of 10%'. Referencing is not always entirely clear, and cohesive devices are occasionally overused or forced. To improve, smoother and more natural linking phrases should be employed to guide the reader through comparisons without disrupting the flow of the sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'accomodators', 'trainees', and 'participators'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies that prevent the response from achieving a higher band. For example, 'anyalysis' is misspelled, 'accomodators' is an awkward choice for people attending classes, and 'college based' lacks a hyphen or proper noun structure. Furthermore, some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'minor percentage' instead of 'small percentage'. To move up, vocabulary must be used with greater precision, correct spelling, and more natural collocational phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to structure sentences with relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'occupying nearly half of the total attendees'. Nevertheless, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that pull the score down, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'tap dance have almost equal participators', missing articles ('in town of Australia'), and awkward prepositional use. Punctuation errors also occur, such as unnecessary commas separating subjects and verbs. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain strict control over grammatical agreements and articles.
