Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the bar chart, such as highlighting private studios at forty-eight percent and ballet among under-eleven students at six hundred. However, certain areas suffer from under-development and lack clarity, particularly in the reporting of specific data figures and comparisons. For instance, phrasing such as 'a plummeted number of students between eleven and sixteen with numbers around three hundred halves of difference between them' is clumsy and imprecise. While an overview is present at the end, it tends to stray into general statements about extracurricular progress rather than synthesising the main trends of the provided visual data. To reach a higher standard, the response needs to present a more polished overview and ensure that all key data points and comparisons are articulated with greater clarity and precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, moving from an introductory statement to body paragraphs detailing the locations chart and the bar chart, followed by an overarching summary. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'Looking at the locations chart' and 'On the other hand'. Nevertheless, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel mechanical or awkward, as seen in repetitive sentence openings and abrupt transitions between data points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the visual information, but logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother. To achieve a higher band, the writer should refine the use of cohesive markers to create a more natural flow between sentences and ensure referencing is entirely clear throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main features of the charts with terms like 'popularity', 'percentage', 'extracurricular activities', and specific dance genres. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'plummeted' and 'distinct', but these attempts are occasionally marred by minor word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, like 'individuals participation' instead of 'individual participation' or 'private studios participations took the lead'. Spelling throughout the text is generally accurate. To move towards a higher level, the writer needs to expand their range of less common lexical items, employ more precise academic phrasing, and exercise greater control over word forms and collocations to ensure natural and sophisticated expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and comparative structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('in town of Australia', 'with taking lead of private studios'), awkward prepositional phrases ('with a massive margin forty-eight percent'), and issues with subject-verb agreement or noun-modifier structures ('Bar charts represent the Ballet genre with most numbers of under eleven students'). Despite these non-impeding errors, meaning remains clear to the reader. To attain a higher band, the writer must produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences, improve control over articles and prepositions within grammatical patterns, and refine punctuation to ensure greater structural accuracy.
