IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Overall, it can be clearly seen in the bar graph that the number of students in the ballet class exceed all other dance classes with the age group of under eleven years whereas the number of young people, who were between eleven to sixteen, was minimum in this class. Moreover, the pie chart depicts the exact locations where dance classes were held. Most sessions of the dance class were organised in the private studio while the college-based-studios was the location with the least number of class.

On the one hand, the pie demonstrates the location of the dance classes

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify two relevant overall features: under-11s have the highest participation in ballet, while the 11–16 group has its lowest figure for ballet; you also note that private studios are the most common location and college-based studios the least common. These observations match the charts. However, the response stops before reporting the detailed figures or comparing the other dance styles and locations, so the task is addressed only minimally. The final sentence, “On the one hand, the pie demonstrates the location of the dance classes,” is unfinished and adds no data. The response is also 51 words below the required minimum. To develop the report, include key figures and comparisons—for example, modern is most popular among older students, while ballet leads among younger students.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The opening gives a recognisable overview, and the use of “Moreover” helps connect the two chart summaries. However, the response has no developed body or clear progression through the information. The transition “On the one hand” promises a contrasting point, but the sentence that follows is incomplete, leaving the reader without the promised explanation. The charts would be easier to follow if you used a complete overview paragraph followed by separate, organised comparisons of the location percentages and the age-group figures. Use linking phrases to show meaningful comparisons, rather than beginning a new point that is not completed.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of chart-related vocabulary, including “depicts,” “locations,” “private studio,” and “college-based studios,” and the main meaning is generally clear. Some choices are imprecise or awkward for describing the data: “the number of students in the ballet class exceed all other dance classes” is less natural than saying ballet had the highest participation among under-11s, and “the number of young people … was minimum in this class” is unclear. “Exact locations” also suggests specific addresses, whereas the chart gives categories of venue. Aim for precise terms such as “proportion,” “venue,” and “participation,” and use natural collocations when comparing figures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both a complex opening sentence and a contrast between age groups, and the reader can understand the main comparisons. Some grammatical errors remain. In “the number of students … exceed,” the singular subject “number” requires “exceeds.” The phrase “who were between eleven to sixteen” uses an incorrect pairing of prepositions; write “who were aged between eleven and sixteen” or “aged eleven to sixteen.” In “the college-based-studios was,” the plural noun phrase requires “were,” or you could write “the college-based studio was.” The final sentence is incomplete, so ensure each sentence contains a complete main clause. More accurate agreement and complete sentence construction would strengthen the report.
