IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates the location of dance classes that are attended by young people in Australia, whereas the table illustrates the types of dance classes (Ballet,Tap, and Modern) with respect to the age group.
Overall, private studios were found to be the highest in terms of location of classes, whereas Ballet dance was found to be the top-most choice among dancers. However, the other dance locations and types of dance classes made significant proportions.
Regarding location of dance classes, private studios accounted for the highest share, at 48%, whereas college-based studios found to be the least common location, at 10%. In contrast, schools halls (after-school classes), community halls and some others places made up the proportion of 24% and 18%, respectively.
In terms of types of dance classes according to the age group, Ballet was the most common choice among children under 11 years, whereas the Modern dance was found to be the popular choice for indivduals within 11 to 16 years, about more than 500 students.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main location pattern accurately: private studios are largest at 48%, and college-based studios are smallest at 10%. You also give an overview and refer to both charts, so the response addresses the task. However, the overview claim that ballet is the top choice among dancers is too broad: ballet leads only for the under-11 group, while modern leads among 11–16-year-olds. The age-group comparison is also incomplete: the figures show under-11s favour ballet (600), whereas older students favour modern (about 520), and tap is similar across groups (450 versus 420). Include these contrasts explicitly and avoid unsupported generalisations to make the key features more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to separate discussion of location and dance types. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Regarding,” and “In terms of” help signal this progression, and the location figures are presented in a logical order. The main limitation is that the final paragraph gives only a partial comparison of the age groups, so the discussion ends abruptly without covering tap or the under-11 preference for ballet in numerical terms. Some transitions also feel formulaic because similar framing phrases introduce each section. Develop the final paragraph with the contrasting figures and a concise comparison to make the progression more complete and flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “accounted for,” “share,” “proportion,” and “most common choice,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “illustrates” and “in terms of.” However, some choices are awkward or imprecise: “top-most choice” is unnatural, “made up the proportion of” is not a natural collocation, and “some others places” is unclear. “Ballet dance” and “the Modern dance” are also unnecessarily wordy. Check spelling in “indivduals” and use concise, accurate chart language. More natural collocations and precise terms would add flexibility and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a clear contrast structure in “whereas the Modern dance was found to be the popular choice…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and the opening sentence successfully distinguishes the two visuals. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “college-based studios found to be the least common,” the passive verb “were” is missing; “schools halls” has an incorrect plural form; and “some others places” has faulty determiner and number agreement. The final sentence also has an awkward comparative construction in “about more than 500 students.” Aim for more consistently accurate clauses, articles, and agreement, and express approximate figures directly, for example, “just over 500 students.”
