IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart shows the location of the different dance classes and the percentage of students attending them, while the bar chart depicts the various dance classes and the age and number of participants in these lessons.
Overall, the private studios and school halls receive the highest proportion of dance students, with college based studios recieveing the lowest traffic. Moreover, the ballet and modern dance classes are the top participant choice, recieving preference from the different age groups.
There are a total of four different locations for dance lessons. The private studios and school halls are the top priority for many participants with a total of 48% and 24% students opting for it. On the other hand, the community halls and college-based studios accomodate remaining portion of 18% and 10% of the dance students.
The different types of dance lessons accomodate participants from various age groups. The ballets class records a total of 600 participants under the age of 11. Whilst the modern dance class has more then 500 participants under 16 years old. The tap dance, however, has over 400 students partaining from both categories.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify both charts and report several key figures accurately, including the 48% share for private studios, 24% for school halls, and the 600 under-11 ballet students. The overview also recognises the leading and smallest locations. However, some important comparisons are incomplete or inaccurate: ballet is not a leading choice across both age groups, since under-11s favour ballet while 11–16-year-olds favour modern; modern has about 300 under-11 participants and 520 older students, not simply “more than 500 participants under 16.” Tap figures are also not over 400 in both groups, as the older group is about 420 but the younger group is about 450. The response covers the task, but the dance-type overview and details need more precise comparison to fully support the main features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: introduction, overview, location details, and dance-type details. This gives the reader a logical route through the two charts, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “On the other hand,” and “however” help signal relationships. The location paragraph is especially easy to follow because it groups the two larger shares before the smaller ones. In the final paragraph, however, the comparisons are less clearly organised: the age groups are not consistently identified, and “Whilst” begins a fragment-like contrast rather than a fully integrated sentence. A more systematic comparison—describing each dance across both age groups, or each age group across all three dances—would make progression clearer and cohesion more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “participants,” “age groups,” and “records,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more varied phrasing, such as “top priority” and “accommodate.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing chart data: studios do not “receive … traffic,” students do not necessarily “opt for” a venue, and “top participant choice” overstates the pattern. Spelling errors such as “recieveing,” “recieving,” “accomodate,” and “partaining” also reduce accuracy. Prefer neutral reporting language and check spelling carefully; precise terms such as “account for,” “attend,” and “the most popular” would suit this task better.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause in “while the bar chart depicts…” and a relative clause in “which …”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. “The ballet class records a total of 600 participants” shifts into the present simple in a way that is awkward for reporting chart data; “the ballet class had about 600” would be more natural. “Whilst the modern dance class…” is not a complete sentence as written, and “the remaining portion” needs an article or plural form (“the remaining portions”). There are also punctuation and sentence-boundary issues around “Whilst.” More consistent sentence completion and control of articles and verb forms would improve accuracy.
