IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart illustrates the current details of location of dance classes while bar graph depicts the data of types of dances according to their age in a city in Australia.

The major proportion of the pie chart is occupied by private studios that is 48%. School halls comprised of 24% of chart covering the second half of the chart. Meanwhile, remaining portion was covered by community halls and college based studios which is 18% and 10% respectively.

In the bar chart, the number of students performing ballet under age of 11 years is around 600, and 300 students from age group of 11-16. Modern dance involved 500 hundred students from age 11-16 and only 300 from under 11. On the other hand, moderate number of students from both groups is in tap dancing that is 450 and 420 respectively.

Overall, It is quite vivid that the ballet dance is the most performed dance by age group under 11 and the private studios is the most common location used for classes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify both charts and report the main location figures accurately: private studios lead at 48%, followed by school halls at 24%, community halls at 18%, and college-based studios at 10%. You also make relevant comparisons between age groups and provide an overall statement. However, one important figure is misreported: modern dance for the 11–16 group is about 520 students, not 500 hundred, and the description of tap as a “moderate number” is vague. The overview mentions only the leading dance and location, so it does not capture the contrasting age-group patterns—for example, younger students favour ballet, while older students favour modern dance. More precise reporting of these comparisons would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on the pie chart, a paragraph on the bar chart, and a concluding overview. This makes the information easy to follow, and transitions such as “Meanwhile” and “On the other hand” help signal comparisons. The progression is generally logical, though some linking is mechanical or imprecise. For example, “On the other hand” introduces tap figures without a clear contrast, and “the second half of the chart” is confusing because school halls account for 24%, not half. The final overview repeats the leading features rather than drawing together the main contrasts across both age groups. Use more exact referencing and connect the comparisons more explicitly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “comprised,” “respectively,” and “involved,” and the reader can understand the main points. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the major proportion … is occupied by.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise: “current details of location,” “performing ballet,” and “moderate number … is in tap dancing” do not express the chart information naturally. “500 hundred” is also an inaccurate number expression. Prefer standard chart language such as “the proportion attending classes at,” “studied ballet,” and “the number of students taking tap classes.” Greater precision in collocation would make the vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mixture of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “private studios that is 48%” and a contrastive sentence beginning “Meanwhile.” Most sentences communicate the intended information, but some grammatical errors remain. In “private studios that is 48%,” the clause has an unclear structure and agreement; write, for example, “Private studios account for 48%.” “School halls comprised of 24%” uses the wrong verb pattern, while “students from age group of 11-16” needs articles and a more accurate prepositional structure. Capitalisation after “Overall” is also inconsistent. Practise concise comparative sentence patterns and check agreement, articles, and verb forms.
