IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given pie chart and bar graph illustrate the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending. It's visible form the chart that maximum people prefered to attend dance clases in private studios and only a small number of people attend the dance class in the college-based studios.

The number of people attending classes in school halls after school is half of the number of people attending dance class in private studios. The rest of the 18% were attending the class in community halls and other spaces. It is intriguing that almost half of the students prefered private schools and then school halls and community halls and other spaces respectively.

While observing the bar graph, it is evident that the students under 11 years of age were more engaged in ballet. The students of age group 11-16 year is found least involved in ballet dance. In contrary, this age group(11-16 years) is more intrested in modern dance type. However, both age groups were almost equally intrested in tap dance and there was only a small difference in their numbers. Again, in modern dance type, there were least numbers of students under age 11.

Overall, we can observe that more students were taking dance classes with private studios. The students under age 11 years were present more in ballet classes and then to tap dance and modern dance respectively. Conversely, the students from age group 11-16 years were involved in modern dance class and then onto tap dance and ballet dance respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both charts and identify the main patterns: private studios are the most common location, while college-based studios are least common; you also compare dance preferences across the two age groups. Most figures and comparisons are consistent with the chart, including the near-equal tap figures and the contrasting ballet and modern patterns. The overview at the end is useful, though it largely repeats details already given rather than drawing the key contrasts together. One imprecision is saying “almost half of the students” prefer private studios: the chart shows 48% of classes by location, not necessarily a direct measure of student preference. To strengthen the response further, report the bar-chart figures more explicitly and distinguish chart proportions from students’ preferences.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, discussion of locations, comparison of dance types, and a concluding overview. The sequence within the age-group discussion is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “While observing,” “However,” and “Conversely” help signal comparisons. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or repetitive: “Overall” restates the preceding summary, while “Again” does not clearly show the relationship between the point about modern dance and the previous comparison. Some references, such as “this age group,” require the reader to infer which group is meant. Grouping the location figures into one concise paragraph and the age comparisons into another, with clearer references and fewer repeated conclusions, would make progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “private studios,” “community halls,” “engaged in ballet,” and “difference in their numbers,” so the meaning is generally clear. However, the range is limited by repeated wording such as “students,” “dance,” “interested,” and “attending,” and some choices are imprecise or unnatural. For example, “prefered private schools” changes the chart’s category from private studios to schools, while “least involved in ballet dance” is less natural than “had the lowest participation in ballet.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “clases,” “intrested,” and “prefered.” Use accurate chart terminology consistently and practise spelling, while varying expressions such as “participated in,” “enrolled in,” and “the most popular class type.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including comparisons with “While observing the bar graph” and “However,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, though. For example, “The students of age group 11-16 year is found least involved” has problems with number agreement and sentence construction; “both age groups were almost equally interested” is more accurate than the original “were almost equally intrested” once spelling is set aside. Punctuation is also inconsistent, as in “spaces. It is intriguing,” and spacing around the parenthesis in “age group(11-16 years)” is missing. Aim for more controlled comparative structures, such as “Students aged 11–16 were least likely to choose ballet,” and check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
