IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart illustrates different places where dance lectures are conducted in Australia while the bar chart compares the popularity of different dance categories among youth.

Overall, it is evident that the Ballet dance classes for students under 11 is the most attended lecture while the modern dance is favored least among them. This trend is inverse for the youth between the age of 11 and 16. Majority of these lectures are conducted at private studios.

Dance practice is conducted at various locations. However the private studios, accounting for 48%, make up for the largest share of these classes. The school halls, which are vacant after school timings, hold the second large proportion of 24%. Following this, the community halls and other places take up 18% of the total, leaving the college-based dance studios as the least used location.

The dance categories are favored by students differently according to their age group. Students, who are younger than 11, are more inclined towards the ballet dance and then the tap and modern dance respectively.

There is a substantial difference between each type as the ballet accounts for 600 students, while the tap and modern claim 450 and 300 in that order.

On the other hand teenagers between 11 and 16, show an inverse choice of dance categories. While the ballet dance is least favored at 300 students, the modern category reaches greater than 500 students as the majority.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You cover both charts and provide a clear overview: ballet is most popular among under-11s, modern is most popular among 11–16-year-olds, and private studios account for the largest share of venues. The location figures are reported accurately, and the under-11 figures are also correct. Your comparison of the older group is less fully supported: you give ballet as 300 and modern as “greater than 500,” but omit the tap figure of about 420. Also, “inverse choice” slightly overstates the pattern, since tap remains close in popularity across the two age groups. Including the missing comparison and describing the overall contrasts more precisely would make the report more complete and better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview, and separate paragraphs for the location and age-group data. The progression from the general patterns to supporting figures is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Following this,” and “On the other hand” help signal relationships. Some connections are less precise or slightly repetitive: “This trend is inverse” is followed by “On the other hand teenagers… show an inverse choice,” while the latter paragraph does not report all the figures needed to demonstrate that contrast. The transition from the location paragraph to the dance-category discussion could also be smoother. More varied referencing and tighter links between comparisons and evidence would strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “accounting for,” “proportion,” “favored,” and “least used,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several imprecise or unnatural choices that limit flexibility and collocational control. “Dance lectures” is not an appropriate term for classes, and “the second large proportion” is less natural than “the second-largest share.” “Claim 450” and “inverse choice” also sound awkward in this context. Aim for precise chart language and natural collocations, such as “classes,” “accounted for,” and “preferred.” This would make the report sound more fluent and appropriately formal without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including relative clauses (“The school halls, which are vacant after school timings…”) and contrast clauses beginning with “While.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. In the overview, “the Ballet dance classes … is” has a subject–verb agreement problem; “the modern dance is favored least” also needs a more natural grammatical construction. The sentence “There is a substantial difference between each type as the ballet accounts…” uses an awkward relationship between “difference” and “each type,” and the final paragraph has a comma separating the subject from its verb in “teenagers between 11 and 16, show.” Review agreement, article use, and punctuation around introductory phrases. Greater accuracy across these structures would improve control.
