IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given pie chart provides an insight on the location and categories of dance classes where young people of Australia are taking part recently.

Four distinct locations for dance practice were reported mainly in the private studios and college-based studios, community and school halls. The statistics clearly communicated that private studios has larger proportion in terms of location priority for the discussed classes. Whereas, college-based studio were least prioritized by young people.

Three types of dances are mentioned here as ballet, tap and modern one. Among all these, young people under 11 years have showed more interest in ballet dancing. Similarly, people under 11-16 years age are more attracted towards the modern dance.

While elaborating the statistical information, it was evaluated that private studio comprised 48% as a preferred location for dance classes which was almost twice as school hall contributing to 28%. Contrastly, community halls and college-based studios are least prioritized as 18% and 10% respectively.

In ballet dancing, approximately 300 young people aged 11-16 were participating and 600 individuals were reported who were under 11 years of age. Moreover, tap dancing showed a slightly changed pattern as 480 and 410 people were seen taking part who were aged under 11 years and 11-16 years respectively. Lastly, in the modern dancing category, 11-16 aged group participants were reported as 510 whereas, 300 individuals were observed who were aged under 11 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both charts and identify several important patterns: private studios are the most common location, college-based studios the least common, and the age groups show different preferences across dance styles. The figures for ballet and modern are reported accurately, and most other values are close to the chart. However, the school-hall share is given as 28% rather than 24%, and the overview says under-11s show the greatest interest in ballet without clearly comparing all three styles. The overview also describes the older group’s preference for modern, but could more explicitly note that tap participation is similar between age groups. This is a relevant, generally clear summary, though some comparisons and key features need fuller, more precise coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview of the main patterns, and paragraphs giving location and participation figures. This makes the two charts easy to distinguish, and transitions such as “Moreover” and “Lastly” help signal progression. However, the organisation is not fully efficient: the location overview is repeated in detail later, while the dance-type overview is only briefly developed before the figures are listed. Some linking is mechanical, and “Whereas” begins a fragment rather than connecting smoothly to the preceding sentence. Grouping the location figures together and then comparing the age groups by dance type would create clearer progression and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “participants,” “comprised,” and “prioritized,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “the statistics clearly communicated” and “it was evaluated.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing charts: “insight on,” “location priority,” and “a slightly changed pattern” do not express the intended comparisons naturally. “Categories of dance classes” is less precise than “types of dance,” and “modern dancing” is less idiomatic than “modern dance.” Greater control of common chart-description collocations would make the vocabulary more precise and flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “whereas” and “as,” and most of the data remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with subject–verb agreement and sentence construction. For example, “private studios has larger proportion” should use a plural verb and an article, while “college-based studio were least prioritized” has a similar agreement problem. “Whereas, college-based studio…” is a fragment, and the comma after “whereas” is unnecessary in that position. There are also awkwardly formed age-group phrases, such as “11-16 aged group participants.” More consistent agreement, complete sentence structures, and careful punctuation would improve accuracy while preserving your range of sentence forms.
