Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart illustrates the propotion of sites for dance classes attended by young individuals in an Australain town and the table displays information on the categories of dance classes considering their ages as well.

Overall, in the pie chart, the dominant sector contributing to dance classes location comprises of personalized studios and the minor sector with least contribution falls under college-based studios. The table shows that a significant amount of children under 11 prefer to do ballet dance and those between 11 to 16 are likely to opt for modern dance practices.

In the pie chart, th major contribution for location of dance classes accounts for private studios which is 48%. School halls which are to be used for dance practices after school hours share a proportion of 24% and the community halls with all other halls share only 18% of the total dance class location distribution. However, the least share, about 10% is shown by the college dance studios which are originally meant for dance practice.

In the table, ballet seems to be the most favored dance type for children under 11 having about 600 students enrolled to practice it. However, it is least prefered by teenage students with only 300 students practicing it. On the other ahnd, the modern dance being the famous dance type for the teenagers, with over 500 students opting to practice it, is least prefered by students under 11. Tap dance having almost the same prefernce for bot age groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response identifies the main patterns in both visuals and supports them with relevant figures. It correctly highlights private studios as the largest location share (48%) and college-based studios as the smallest (10%), and accurately contrasts ballet as most popular among under-11s (600) with modern among 11–16-year-olds (about 520). The overview also captures the broad age-group contrast. However, the comparison of tap is left vague: “almost the same preference” would be stronger with the figures (450 and about 420). The description of the location chart is detailed, but the age-group chart could be reported more precisely and systematically. Overall, the key features are selected and supported, though a few comparisons are generalised rather than fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: introduction, overview, and separate descriptions of the two visuals. This makes the information easy to follow, and contrasts such as “However” and “On the other hand” help signal differences between age groups. The progression is generally logical, but some linking is mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “In the pie chart” and “In the table.” The final paragraph also moves through the dance styles without a fully consistent comparison pattern, and the tap observation feels appended rather than integrated. To strengthen cohesion, organise the age-group figures by dance style or compare both age groups in each sentence, using clearer referencing and fewer repeated transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing charts, including “proportion,” “dominant sector,” “least share,” “enrolled,” and “opt for.” Some less common choices are attempted, but several are inaccurate or unnatural in this context: “personalized studios” for private studios, “contribution” for share, and “dance practices” for dance styles or classes. Spelling errors such as “propotion,” “Australain,” “prefered,” and “prefernce” also reduce accuracy, although the intended meaning remains clear. Aim for precise, conventional chart language rather than elaborate phrasing. For example, “accounted for” and “represented” are more natural when reporting percentages, while “popular” or “chosen” fits student preferences.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and contrast structures, and the main comparisons are generally understandable. Some sentences show reasonable control, such as the sentence contrasting ballet enrolments across the two age groups. However, there are some grammatical errors and awkward constructions. In the overview, “the dominant sector … comprises of” has an incorrect verb pattern, and “the minor sector with least contribution falls under” is difficult to structure clearly. The final sentence, “Tap dance having almost the same preference for bot age groups,” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. Review sentence completeness, subject–verb patterns, and article use, and make sure each comparison has a clear subject and verb.
