IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The charts depicts the proportion of location and types of dance classes young people in a town in australia are attending at present.

Overall, private studios occupied the highest proportion compared to any other dance locations. The number of under 11 students were noticeably higher in ballet dance class while the age group between 11 and 16 were more interested in modern dance class.

Private studies accounted for 48% of dance classes, marking it the highest among all the locations. While school halls were 24% of dance classes, community halls and college-based studios were just 18% and 10% respectively.

In ballet classes, the age group of under 11 were approximately double than the age group between 11 and 16. Although the number of both the age group students were similar in tap classes, under 11 students were slightly more. In mordern classes, the number of students from 11 to 16 were almost two-fold of under 11 age group.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both charts and give a relevant overview: private studios are the largest location, and the age groups show different preferences across dance styles. Most figures are reported accurately, including the location percentages and the near-equal tap totals. However, the overview could identify the main contrast more precisely: under-11s favour ballet, while 11–16-year-olds have their highest figure in modern dance. The comparison that tap numbers are similar is also useful, but could be supported with the approximate figures. The response is 144 words, below the 150-word minimum; the 14 words copied from the prompt are not counted. Add a little more detail to develop the comparisons fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to location data and then age-group comparisons. This makes the two chart topics easy to follow. Linking words such as “Overall,” “While,” and “Although” help connect contrasting information, and the sequence within each data paragraph is generally logical. However, some connections are mechanical, and the final paragraph strings together comparisons without a clear progression from the largest differences to the smaller one. The phrase “both the age group students” also makes the reference unclear. Use more precise references to the two age groups and organise the comparisons consistently, for example by dance type or by age group.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounted for,” “highest,” and “approximately,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some variety in how you describe comparisons, such as “double,” “similar,” and “almost two-fold.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “private studies” should be “private studios,” and “occupied the highest proportion” is not a natural way to describe the chart. “Dance class” is repeated frequently, while “mordern” is misspelled. Aim for more precise, natural reporting language and check spelling carefully; these improvements would make the description more fluent and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “While” and “Although,” and the overall meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors are present, particularly with subject–verb agreement and articles. For example, “The charts depicts” should be “The charts depict,” and “The number of under 11 students were” should be “The number of under-11 students was.” In “the age group … were approximately double,” the singular subject requires “was,” and “both the age group students” needs a clearer grammatical construction, such as “the numbers for both age groups.” Review agreement between the subject and verb, and use articles and plural forms consistently when comparing groups.
