Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both charts and provide a relevant overview: private studios are the leading location, while ballet and modern are the most and least attended styles among under-11s. Most figures are accurate, including the 48%, 24%, 18% and 10% location shares, and the ballet figures for both age groups. Some comparisons are less fully reported: the 11–16 modern figure is about 520, rather than simply “almost 500,” and the under-11 tap figure is about 450, compared with about 420 for older students. Also, the overview’s claim that classes are frequent in college-based studios conflicts with the chart, where this is the least common location. More precise comparisons and a corrected overview would make the key features clearer and more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for the two charts. This makes the information easy to locate, and connectors such as “Overall,” “However” and “Conversely” show an attempt to guide the reader through comparisons. However, some links are mechanical or do not express the relationship accurately: “However” introduces figures that simply add to the location breakdown, while “While” begins an incomplete contrast. The overview also shifts from the leading location to an inaccurate statement about college-based studios, interrupting the progression of the main points. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each figure directly to its comparison—for example, contrast the two age groups within each dance style.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “depicts,” “attend,” “category” and “participate,” and the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing charts: “frequent in college-based studios,” “made 18%,” and “less ballet classes involved 300 students” do not express the data clearly. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form slips, such as “cdance,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for standard reporting collocations and use the same terms consistently, such as “accounted for,” “the proportion of classes,” and “the number of students.” This would make your vocabulary more precise without requiring unnecessarily complex wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “whereas,” “while” and “that.” The main meaning is usually recoverable, but some sentence structures are incomplete or awkwardly joined. For example, “While, a very few … comprised of 10%” is a fragment, and “community halls and other made 18%” lacks a clear grammatical subject and verb pattern. There are also errors in articles, plurals and punctuation, as in “the bar chart,” “dance classes take place,” and the missing space in “24%of them.” Use complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check punctuation around linking clauses. More consistent control of these patterns would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex sentences.
