IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two types of graphs concludes to the result as Ballet dance type with the most popularity among the under 11s whereas the same dance is lacking popularity among the age group 11-16 along with the high popularity of private studios. The pie chart is showing the major sector as private studios with 48% of area covered and the minor sector as college based studios covering only 10% of the circle, along these two more sectors lies in between those two the school halls with 24% area covering and the sector of the community halls & others with 18% of area in the circle. Which conlcludes to the high popularity of private studios.

The bar graph is illustrating the types of dance classes and the popularity of the types in a couple of age groups. The bar grap illustrates the interest in dance classes in ages under 11 as ballet with most children then is tap dance and least number of children under 11 are involved in modern dance. on the other hand we have the age group 11-16 which are interested the most in modern dance next is the tap dance and at last is the ballet dance which has least number of children involved in it.

At the end, the result from both graphs concludes to high popularity of private studios and ballet dance and least popularity of college-based studios and the modern dance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both charts and identify several key comparisons: private studios are the largest location category at 48%, college-based studios the smallest at 10%, and the leading dance style differs by age group. Your descriptions of the bar chart’s rankings are accurate. However, the final overview says ballet is least popular overall and modern is least popular, which is not supported: modern is the least chosen only among under-11s, while ballet is least chosen among 11–16-year-olds. The opening also links private studios to the age-group results without evidence that the charts show this relationship. A clearer overview distinguishing the two charts, followed by a few accurate figures for each age group, would make the response more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: it introduces the charts, discusses the pie chart, then the bar chart, and ends with a summary. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is weakened by repeated conclusions, especially the repeated claim about private studios, and by transitions such as “At the end” that do not clearly signal a useful summary. The first paragraph also combines the age-group finding with the location chart, making the relationship between the data unclear. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and each chart, and connect comparisons directly—for example, contrast the age groups’ preferences within the bar-chart paragraph. This would make cohesion less repetitive and the organisation more purposeful.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “private studios,” “college-based studios,” “age group,” and “least number,” so the main information is generally understandable. There is also some attempt to vary wording with “major sector” and “illustrating.” However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “graphs concludes to the result,” “area covered,” and “high popularity,” and “the sector … with 18% of area in the circle” is unnecessarily wordy. Spelling errors such as “conlcludes” and “grap” also reduce control. Prefer precise chart language such as “accounted for,” “share,” and “was the most popular choice,” and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the reader can usually follow the comparisons. However, some sentence structures are faulty or difficult to control. For example, “The two types of graphs concludes to the result as…” has a subject–verb agreement error and an unclear clause structure; “Which concludes to…” is a sentence fragment, while the long sentence beginning “The pie chart is showing…” joins several ideas without clear punctuation. There are also errors in constructions such as “the age group 11-16 which are interested.” Use complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and divide lists of chart details into shorter clauses. More consistent agreement and punctuation would improve accuracy while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
