IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The pie chart is showing a data regarding the location of dance classes in Australia.
Here is the full breakdown of the pie chart that how much classes are being conducted and where:
Private studio : 48% of the total classes are conducted here or you can say that majority of the classes take place here in the private studio.
Community halls and others : 18% of the classes are conducted here.
School halls : 24% of classes are conducted here, which is the second place after private studio.
College based-studios : 10% of the students go there.
The next information is provided using the bar chart.
This is actually providing the information related to the types of dance classes and the number if students attending them based on their age group.
600 students that are under 11 are attending ballet classes.
300 students ranging from 11-16 years are also attending ballet classes.
450 students of under 11 years and approximately 420 students having age range of 11-16 are attending tap dance classes respectively.
520 students of 11-16 years and only 300 students of under 11 are attending modern dance class.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You report the main figures from both charts accurately, including the 48% share for private studios and the age-group figures for ballet, tap and modern dance. You also identify private studios as the most common location and school halls as the second largest category. However, the response is mainly a list of individual data points rather than a summary of the most important patterns. It lacks a clear overall overview comparing the charts—for example, that private studios dominate class locations, while preferences by age differ: under-11s favour ballet, whereas 11–16-year-olds favour modern dance. The opening also says the chart concerns Australia generally, rather than young people in one town. These omissions leave the task only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic sequence: it discusses the pie chart first, then introduces the bar chart and reports its figures. Labels such as “The next information” help signal the change of chart, and the data are generally easy to locate. However, the organisation is largely a series of separate statements, with no concluding overview to connect the key comparisons. The repeated pattern of giving one figure per sentence makes the report feel list-like, and phrases such as “Here is the full breakdown” do not establish a clear analytical progression. Grouping the age-group comparisons by dance type and using links such as “whereas” or “by contrast” would make relationships between figures clearer and improve the overall flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough task-related vocabulary to communicate the chart information, including “breakdown,” “conducted,” “attending,” and “age group.” The terms for the dance styles and locations are mostly clear, and repetition does not prevent understanding. However, some wording is imprecise or unnatural for a formal chart report: “how much classes are being conducted,” “students go there,” and “only 300” are not the most suitable ways to describe the data. “Full breakdown” also overstates the detail provided. Aim for precise reporting expressions such as “accounted for,” “were enrolled in,” and “the number of students attending.” More varied, accurate comparison language would help you describe patterns rather than simply repeat figures.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Most sentences communicate a single figure clearly, and you attempt some longer structures, for example, “450 students of under 11 years and approximately 420 students having age range of 11-16 are attending tap dance classes respectively.” However, the range is limited, and several sentence patterns are awkward or inaccurate. The opening, “The pie chart is showing a data,” has problems with tense and article use; “the information related to the types … and the number if students” contains a typing error and an incomplete grammatical construction. In “which is the second place after private studio,” the clause is not formed naturally. Use accurate present-simple reporting structures and practise combining comparisons into controlled sentences, while checking articles, agreement and punctuation.
