IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The pie chart and the bar chart show the information about the four locations and three type of dance classes that young people of two different age groups are going to these days in a Australian's town these respectively.

Overall, private studios are the most common locations whereas college-based studios are the least common locations. Ballet is the most popular dance class while Modern has low popularity among the children that are under 11. On the other hand, the case for the age group (11-16) is totally opposite with Ballet as the lowest and Modern being the highest.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several relevant main features: private studios are the most common location, college-based studios the least common, and the age-group patterns for ballet and modern differ. However, the response addresses the task only partially. It gives no figures for the locations or dance classes, and the final paragraph stops after “Regarding location, Private studios,” leaving the report incomplete. The overview also says ballet is the most popular overall, although the chart shows this is true only for under-11s; among 11–16-year-olds, modern is highest. The response is 48 words below the required minimum, which contributes to the limited coverage. Include the key percentages and comparisons, and complete both chart descriptions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and the start of a paragraph about locations. The overview also uses “On the other hand” to signal a contrast between age groups. However, the report has no clear progression beyond this point because the final paragraph ends abruptly, and the location chart is not actually described. The opening sentence is difficult to follow, particularly “these respectively,” which makes the relationship between the two charts unclear. Organise the response into a complete introduction, a concise overview, and separate, logically ordered details for the location and age-group charts. Use linking phrases to clarify comparisons rather than relying on a single contrast marker.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses relevant chart vocabulary, including “locations,” “age groups,” “most common,” and “least common,” so the topic is generally clear. There is some variation in phrasing, such as “the case … is totally opposite,” but several expressions are awkward or imprecise: “three type of dance classes,” “going to these days,” and “low popularity.” “Totally opposite” also overstates the comparison, since the age-group patterns differ by class rather than reversing in every respect. Aim for precise, natural language for describing data, such as “the figures show contrasting preferences” or “the least popular class.” This would make the limited range more effective and reduce noticeable word-choice problems.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a complex opening sentence and use a contrast structure in the overview, but control is uneven and the range of sentence patterns is limited. Errors include “a Australian's town,” where the article and possessive construction are faulty, and “three type,” which needs a plural noun. The opening sentence also has an unclear structure around “that young people … are going to these days in a Australian's town these respectively.” The phrase “the age group (11-16) is totally opposite” does not form a clear comparison between the groups. Use shorter, controlled sentences and check articles, plurals, and clause structure. For example, state directly that classes are held in four locations, then describe the two age groups’ preferences in separate sentences.
