Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response selects and reports the main features accurately. The overview identifies private studios as the largest location share and college-based studios as the smallest, then contrasts ballet’s stronger appeal to under-11s with modern dance’s greater popularity among 11–16-year-olds. The supporting figures for all three dance styles and the four locations are consistent with the chart, and the comparisons make the summary informative. Tap is also reported accurately, although its relatively small difference between age groups could be made more explicit in the overview or comparison. Overall, the key information is well covered and supported; to strengthen the response further, make the overview slightly more comprehensive by noting that tap participation is similar across the two age groups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is organised clearly: an introduction is followed by an overview, then a paragraph on locations and one comparing dance styles. This gives the reader a logical progression from the broad patterns to the supporting figures. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “In contrast” help signal relationships, and the comparisons within the final paragraph are easy to follow. Cohesion is generally effective, though some transitions and punctuation are not consistently controlled—for example, “According to the pie chart” begins a new section without a space after the preceding full stop in the submitted text. More varied, carefully punctuated links between the chart descriptions would make the progression smoother and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Vocabulary is adequate for describing the charts, with useful terms such as “accounting for,” “proportion,” “venues,” and “attracts.” The response also uses comparison language appropriately, including “the least common choice” and “considerably more popular.” However, some spelling errors and imprecise or repetitive phrasing limit the range and control: “prefered” and “commom” are misspelled, while “dance classes take place” is less precise than describing where students attend classes. “Popular” is repeated several times, and “clear differences” is broad when the figures show that tap participation is quite similar. Aim for accurate spelling and more precise alternatives such as “participation,” “enrolment,” or “attendance,” while avoiding unnecessary repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including a well-formed contrast with “whereas” and a comparison using “compared with.” Most sentences communicate the intended information clearly, and the present tense is generally appropriate for describing the charts. Some errors in sentence boundaries, spacing, and punctuation remain: for example, “Overall, private studios …,while” lacks a space after the comma, and “in contrast” begins a sentence with a lowercase letter. There is also an article error in “in am Australian town.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy. Proofread sentence openings, articles, and punctuation, and continue using varied comparison structures with consistent control.
