Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main location, noting that private studios account for the largest share, and you make useful comparisons across the dance styles. The figures for ballet and modern are broadly accurate, and you correctly describe tap participation as similar between age groups, with the younger group slightly higher. However, the overview is not fully reliable: school halls are described as having the lowest share, although college-based studios are lowest at 10%, while school halls represent 24%. The opening also says young people are “watching” classes rather than attending them. To strengthen the response, give a clear, accurate overview of both charts and report all four location proportions correctly, including the 18% for community halls and other venues.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response moves from a brief overview of the charts to location details and then to comparisons in the bar chart, so the reader can generally follow the subject. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the second paragraph combines several overview points in a run-on sequence, and the third paragraph repeats the location information without a clear comparison of all categories. Linking phrases such as “same like” and “for tap dance” are either awkward or provide limited guidance. Organise the response into a concise overview followed by one paragraph for locations and one for age-group comparisons. Use clear transitions such as “By contrast” and “Meanwhile,” and ensure each sentence develops a distinct point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “bar chart,” “participating,” and “taking part,” and the reader can understand the main comparisons. However, the range is limited and some word choices are inaccurate or repetitive. “Watching” does not describe attending dance classes, and “few dance classes are in college-based studion” is both imprecise and affected by a spelling error. Repeating “dance class” and “students” also makes the report less flexible. Choose precise terms for attendance and venues, and vary expressions for quantities and comparisons. For example, describe the figures as the “share of classes” or “proportion of students,” depending on what the chart actually measures.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more extended sentences, including comparisons such as “while half of it only 300…” and “In modern dance… while only 300…”. However, errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include the sentence fragment “same like bar chart represents,” missing or misplaced articles in “Private studio has highest proportion,” and the unclear construction “for tap dance both under 11 and 11-16 are relatively equal but under 11 and slightly higher.” Agreement and sentence boundaries also need attention. Practise complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check articles, plurals, and punctuation. For instance: “Tap participation was similar in both age groups, although the under-11 group was slightly larger.”
