IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie char presents information on the location of dance classes attended by young individuals in an Austrialian town currently. While bar chart illustrates the types of dance classes preferred by different age groups.
Overall, private studios are by far the most common venue, accounting for nearly half of the classes. In terms of dance types, ballet is clearly the preferred choice among young children, whereas modern dance classses attracts more students in older age groups. Tap dance shows a relatively balanced participation across the both groups
Ballet dance is most popular among young ones under 11 with 600 students, followed by tap dance with more than 400 pupils. Modern dance was least popular among young ones with only 300 students. Conversely, the young people between 11 to 16 preferred modern dance with a turn up of more than 500 students followed by tap dance with more than 400 individuals. Ballet dance is selected by least number of persons between 11 to 16 as only 300 of them selected ballet dance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main venue clearly: private studios account for 48%, described accurately as nearly half. You also make useful comparisons between age groups, including the contrast between ballet for under-11s and modern for 11–16-year-olds, and your student figures broadly match the chart. However, the location chart is not fully reported: the other three venues and their proportions are omitted. The overview also says tap participation is balanced, but the figures (450 and 420) would be clearer if explicitly compared. Your response therefore covers the task’s main features, but some parts are less fully developed. Include the remaining venue shares and make the key comparisons more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph comparing dance types by age. The progression from the general patterns to specific figures is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “whereas,” and “Conversely” help signal contrasts. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, the location information is not developed after the overview, so the coverage feels uneven. Some phrasing, such as “followed by” repeated for both age groups, also makes the comparisons slightly formulaic. A fuller paragraph grouping the venue shares, followed by the age-group comparisons, would create a more balanced progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “accounting for,” “preferred choice,” “participation,” and “least popular,” which helps describe proportions and rankings. There are also attempts at varied wording for students, such as “pupils” and “individuals.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “turn up” does not fit a chart description, and “selected” is repeated where “studied” or “attended” would be more precise. Spelling errors such as “Austrialian” and “classses” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the comparisons, but more precise collocations and careful proofreading would strengthen the vocabulary control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the contrast in “While bar chart illustrates…” and the longer sentence beginning “Ballet dance is most popular…”. The main comparisons remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening “While bar chart illustrates…” is a sentence fragment, and “modern dance classses attracts” has a subject–verb agreement problem. Other examples include “across the both groups” and “between 11 to 16,” where article use and preposition patterns need correction. The final sentence also repeats the age range awkwardly. Aim to make each sentence complete, check singular and plural agreement, and use standard forms such as “between 11 and 16” to improve accuracy.
