IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The chart gives the information of types of dance classes and their locations, in private studios there are 48 percent dance classes, community halls and other have 18 percent, school halls have 24 percent dance classes after school and college based studios 10 percent dance classes in a town in Australia people are currently attending.

As you see the number of students in modern dance classes are 300, these are under 11 age group pupils. While the students of 11 to 16 age group are more than under 11. In 11 to 16 age group students are above 500. Moreover there are tap dance classes in which under 11 age group students are 480 and 11 to 16 age group contains 425 pupils.

There is also a ballet dance class which holds students 610, those are under 11 age group, 11 to 16 age group has less students around 300.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify both chart topics and report several relevant figures, including the location shares and the broad age-group contrasts in ballet and modern. However, the response does not provide a clear overview of the main features, and the comparisons are incomplete. For example, it omits that private studios are the largest location and college-based studios the smallest, and it does not clearly summarise how preferences differ across all three dance styles. Some figures are also inaccurate: under-11 tap is about 450, not 480, and tap for ages 11–16 is about 420, not 425. The statement that older students are “more than under 11” is too general to explain the pattern. Organise the key trends and report the chart data more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic sequence: it first describes the location chart and then discusses the dance types, with separate paragraphs helping distinguish these topics. Linking expressions such as “While” and “Moreover” show an attempt to connect information. However, the first sentence is overloaded with several percentages, making the location information difficult to follow, and the later paragraphs list figures without a clear progression or summary. “As you see” is an informal and unclear transition, while “these” and “those” do not always make their references precise. Group the information into a clear introduction, an overview, and focused detail paragraphs, and use comparisons to guide the reader rather than relying on a sequence of separate statements.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “private studios,” “community halls,” “age group,” and the names of the dance styles, so the reader can generally understand what is being described. There is some variation in how you refer to students, such as “pupils,” but the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or unnatural. For instance, “there are 300” and “holds students 610” do not express chart figures naturally, and “more than under 11” is imprecise. The repeated use of “dance classes” also makes the description less concise. Build a more accurate range for describing proportions, numbers, and comparisons, while choosing collocations that fit statistical reporting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some sentence variety, including a contrast introduced by “While” and a relative clause in “in which under 11 age group students are 480.” However, most sentences rely on simple structures or long strings of information joined by commas, and several constructions are faulty. For example, “community halls and other have 18 percent” lacks a clear grammatical subject, while “those are under 11 age group pupils” has an unclear pronoun reference and missing articles. The final sentence, “11 to 16 age group has less students,” also needs a clearer subject construction and correct comparative form. Use shorter, complete sentences and practise articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries to make the data easier to understand.
