Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The charts illustrate the distribution of locations where dance classes are held through a pie chart and data on how different age groups prefer different types of dance forms using a bar graph.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers both charts and gives a clear overview: private studios are identified as the leading location, while preferences differ by age group. Most figures are reported accurately, including the location percentages and the main contrasts in ballet and modern dance. The comparison of tap is also broadly correct, though the chart shows about 420 students aged 11–16 rather than 410. The overview’s claim that under-11s preferred both ballet and tap is less precise: ballet is their most popular style, while modern is their least popular; among older students, modern leads. To strengthen the report, make the overview more comparative and identify the largest age-group differences explicitly, while keeping the useful supporting figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on locations and a final paragraph comparing dance styles. This makes the two chart topics easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, particularly through repeated use of “followed by” and repeated references to “dance classes” and “locations.” The overview also combines several points in a long sentence, and the transition from the location data to the age-group data could be smoother. Some references are not fully clear, as in “which contribute to the maximum number of locations,” where “which” refers awkwardly to private studios. Use more varied comparison links and make each paragraph’s focus explicit to improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing charts, including “distribution,” “preferred,” “attracts” and “enroll,” and the meaning remains clear. Some choices, however, are imprecise or unnatural for this context. “Compose of” is not the right collocation for describing a share, and “maximum number of locations” confuses the proportion of classes with a count of locations. “Only comprises of 300 students” is also an awkward way to report a figure. The response repeats “dance classes” and “locations” rather than using a wider range of accurate chart language. Aim for precise terms such as “account for,” “proportion,” “figure” and “number of students,” while avoiding unnecessary synonyms that alter the meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while” and “that,” and most meanings are understandable. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “Overall, The majority,” the capitalisation after the comma is incorrect; “studios that compose of 48%” has an incomplete verb pattern; and “students that are in the age group” uses an unsuitable relative pronoun for people. There is also a missing space after the full stop in “hours.Community.” The sentence beginning “Students under the age of 11 prefer…” is long and would be clearer if divided or carefully punctuated. Check verb patterns, relative clauses and sentence boundaries to make the complex structures more controlled.
