IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart shows where dance classes are held, while the bar chart represents the type of dance classes attended by different age groups in a town in Australia.
Overall, private studios are the most common places for dance classes and Ballet is the dance type which is most popular in younger age group.
Private studios accounts for 48% of the location of dance classes which is the highest proportion among all the categories shown. Following that. school halls represented 24% after school and community halls and others are responsible for 18%. The college based studios showed the least figure with only 10%.
Regarding the types, ballet is the most popular dance type among the age group group under 11, which is done by above 600 children. The figures are far more than tap and modern, about 450 and 300 students. By contrast, children age group ranging from 11 to 16 are most interested in modern dance type, with above 500 students which holds thighest number.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both charts and provide a clear overview, identifying private studios as the leading location and ballet as the most popular choice for children under 11. Most location figures are reported accurately, and the comparisons for the younger group are relevant. However, the overview is incomplete: it does not identify modern as the leading style among 11–16-year-olds, nor note that ballet is least popular in that group. The older group’s figures are also only partly reported; the chart shows about 300 for ballet and 420 for tap, but these are omitted. The claim that ballet is most popular in the younger group is accurate, but the overview would be stronger if it summarised the contrasting age-group preferences and the main patterns across both charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a sensible four-part structure: introduction, overview, location details and dance-type details. This makes the two charts easy to distinguish, and transitions such as “Overall” and “Regarding the types” help guide the reader. The progression is generally logical, but cohesion is not always smooth. “Following that.” is an incorrect sentence break, and the location figures are presented as a list rather than being linked through clear comparisons. The final paragraph also focuses on the younger group before shifting to the older group without reporting its other figures. Grouping the age-group comparisons more systematically and using linking phrases such as “whereas” or “in contrast” would make the progression more flexible and complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “categories,” “represented” and “most common,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several inaccurate or awkward choices that limit precision. “The college based studios showed the least figure” is unnatural, while “holds thighest number” contains a spelling error and an unsuitable collocation. “Dance type” is repeated, and “children age group ranging from 11 to 16” is cumbersome. Aim for concise, natural chart language and check spelling carefully. For example, describe a category as having the “smallest share,” and say that a style “attracted the most students” rather than saying it “holds” a number.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the opening contrast between the charts and the clause beginning “which is done by above 600 children.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. In “Private studios accounts,” the plural subject requires “account”; “the most popular … in younger age group” needs an article; and “the age group group under 11” repeats a noun. The sentence “Following that. school halls represented…” also has faulty punctuation, and “children age group ranging from 11 to 16 are” has an awkward grammatical construction. These errors rarely prevent understanding, but more consistent agreement, articles and sentence boundaries would improve accuracy.
