Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the two charts and report some relevant headline features: private studios have the largest share, college-based studios the smallest, and the leading dance styles differ by age group. However, the response is very incomplete: it gives no figures, omits the other location percentages, and does not compare the remaining dance-style results. It also misstates the chart’s measure by saying studios are chosen by the “highest number” of young people; the chart gives percentages of class locations. The overview says 11–16-year-olds prefer modern, which is supported, but the under-11 preference for ballet is not developed with the substantial contrast in tap and modern. The required minimum of 150 words is not met. To improve, include a fuller overview and select key figures and comparisons from both charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic, sensible structure: an opening sentence introduces the charts, followed by a separate overview beginning “Overall.” This makes the main purpose easy to recognise. The ideas within the overview are also grouped by chart feature, rather than being presented as unrelated details. However, the response ends before developing these points, so there is little progression beyond the initial summary and no supporting comparisons. Cohesive links are limited, and the relationship between the location chart and the age-group chart could be made clearer. In a fuller response, use separate body paragraphs for the location figures and dance-style comparisons, with linking phrases such as “By contrast” and “Meanwhile” to guide the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “locations,” “dance classes,” “private studios,” “college-based studios,” and the names of the dance styles. This is enough to communicate the general subject, but the range is narrow and some choices are imprecise or unnatural. “Dance steps” does not accurately describe the chart’s categories, which are types or styles of dance, and “love” is too informal for an academic report. The phrase “highest number of youth” also blurs the distinction between a percentage share and a student count. Aim for precise reporting language such as “accounted for,” “proportion,” “most popular,” and “approximately,” while avoiding conversational expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes a compound opening sentence and an overview with contrasting information, showing some ability to connect ideas. Meaning is generally understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. In “private studios is chosen,” the plural subject requires a plural verb, and the passive construction is awkward for describing a chart proportion. “College-based studios consists” also has subject–verb disagreement; “studios” takes “constitute” or “account for.” The phrase “the under eleven age group” would be clearer as “the under-11 age group,” and the sentence about the 11–16 group needs a more formal, grammatically controlled construction. Practise accurate agreement and use varied comparison structures, for example, “Ballet was most popular among under-11s, whereas modern was preferred by older students.”
