IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart displays the locations of dance classes attended by young people in an Australian town, while the bar graph shows the variations of dance classes.

Overall, private studios are the most popular location for dance classes, while college-based studios are least preferred. Ballet is mostly attended by very young children, whereas modern dances are majorly attended by teenagers.

The pie chart shows that 48% of young people have their classes in private studios, while 24% of them prefer school halls after attending their clases. Only 18% of the younger people attends their dance classes in community halls and others. Since only 10% of them take their dance lessons in college-based studios, these places are least preferred.

The bar chart on types of dance classes taken by two age groups, shows that 600 students of ballet are 11 years old, while 300 are 11-16 years old. More than 400 people from these age groups attend tap dance classes and among them most are 11 years old. More than 500 people who take modern dances are 11-16 years old, which is much larger than 11 years olds, since only 300 of them take this dance lesson.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both charts and give a clear overview of the main patterns: private studios are the largest location category, college-based studios the smallest, and the preferred dance styles differ by age. Most figures are accurately reported, including the location percentages and the ballet and modern comparisons. However, the tap comparison is unclear and partly inaccurate: the chart shows about 450 under-11s and 420 students aged 11–16, so the younger group is only slightly larger, not simply “most” without qualification. Also, “600 students of ballet are 11 years old” misstates the age group; these students are under 11. The response selects relevant features, but more precise comparisons and clearer age labels would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a sensible four-paragraph structure: introduction, overview, location details, and age-group details. This gives the reader a coherent route through both charts, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “while,” and “Since” help connect information. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In “while 24% of them prefer school halls after attending their clases,” the relationship between the percentage and “after attending” is confusing. The final paragraph also moves through ballet, tap, and modern without consistently comparing the two age groups in parallel. Use clearer transitions such as “By contrast” and “For tap, the figures are similar,” and organise each dance style around a direct comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of chart vocabulary, including “locations,” “most popular,” “least preferred,” “attend,” and “age groups,” so the main information is understandable. There are also attempts at more varied phrasing, such as “variations” and “majorly,” but some choices are unnatural or imprecise for this task. “Variations of dance classes” would be better expressed as the types or styles of dance, and “majorly attended” is not a natural collocation. “Younger people” is also less precise than naming the under-11 group. The spelling error “clases” is noticeable. Aim for accurate, conventional chart language rather than using less familiar words where a simpler term is more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while” and “since,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain. In “Only 18% of the younger people attends,” the plural subject requires “attend”; similarly, “11 years olds” should be “11-year-olds” or, more accurately here, “under-11s.” The sentence beginning “The bar chart on types of dance classes taken by two age groups, shows” has an unnecessary comma separating the subject from its verb. The phrase “600 students of ballet are 11 years old” also needs a more accurate grammatical construction to identify the under-11 group. Check subject–verb agreement, age-group forms, and punctuation around introductory phrases.
