Student answer (Band 5.5)

The charts illustrates information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

At first, the round graph gives information about the location of dance classes. Most of the people in town are attending private studios which is 48%, the most in percentage. Second highest people attend school halls(after-school) which is 24% overall. Lastly, people attend comminuty halls & other and college bases studios which are the lowest attending locations as only 18% and 10% of all people attend.

The other graph illustrates the number of younsters attending different kinds of dance classes. Childrens under 11 attend ballet dance classes the most which is more than 600 in number, tap and modern dance classes are attended by 450 and 300 numbers of kids. On another hand, 11-16 aged childrens attend modern dance classes the most, then the number of dancers in tap classes are close to 450 as well, and ballet dance classes are attended by least number of kids which is closest to 300.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You cover both charts and identify the main location pattern: private studios lead at 48%, followed by school halls at 24%, while college-based studios are lowest at 10%. You also compare the age groups, correctly noting that under-11s favour ballet and 11–16-year-olds favour modern. However, the response lacks a clear overall summary bringing these key contrasts together, and some figures are imprecise: under-11 ballet is about 600, not more than 600, while older students’ tap attendance is about 420 rather than close to 450. The location figures are reported, but the dance-type comparisons are less fully developed. A concise overview and more accurate comparisons would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it discusses the location chart first and the age-group chart second, so the reader can follow the shift in topic. Basic linking expressions such as “At first,” “Lastly,” and “On another hand” help signal sequence and contrast. However, the opening sentence repeats the task wording rather than presenting an overview, and the paragraphs are not clearly separated, which makes the two chart sections less distinct. Some transitions are mechanical, and phrases such as “the most in percentage” do not express the comparison smoothly. Use a separate overview and organise the details into clearly defined paragraphs, with more precise links between comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “attending,” “percentage,” “number,” and “the most,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate: “round graph” is not the usual term for a pie chart, “college bases studios” is incorrect, and “younsters” and “comminuty” are misspelled. Repeated use of “attend” and “dance classes” also makes the description sound basic. Aim for accurate chart language and varied comparison phrases, such as “accounted for,” “the largest share,” and “was the most popular.” Check spelling and collocations carefully, especially for key labels taken from the chart.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and most of the information remains understandable. There are, however, some errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction. For example, “The charts illustrates” should be “The charts illustrate,” and “Most of the people … which is 48%” has an unclear singular reference; “the largest share, at 48%” would be more controlled. Phrases such as “450 and 300 numbers of kids” also show difficulty forming comparisons grammatically. The response relies heavily on similar sentence patterns, so practise combining accurate clauses with comparative structures. Check subject–verb agreement and make sure each pronoun clearly refers to the correct figure or group.
