IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of dance classes in different location in a town in australia and the bar chart shows the number of student from different age group ( under 11 and aged 11-16 ) attending the three differnt dance classes ( ballet , tap , modern).

Overall , half of the practice classes are held in private studios and the other half in different community/school halls. Also, most of the younger people prefer ballet practices over modern and tap whereas the teenagers prefer the opposite with majority choosing modern dance lessons.

Private studios dominate the majority of the dance ground at 48% almost half of the total location which is the most popular option. One quarter of the classes are performed in school halls while they are not being used for school purposes. Other community halls also play a major part in hosting the dance classes at 18%. College-based studios are by far the least popular option with 10% usage.

On one hand, ballet is the most learnt dance type which is more common among younger learners. 600 younger learners take ballet classes whereas only 300 teenagers attend ballet classes. On the other hand, modern dance is more common among teenagers with more than 500 learners and only 300 younger learners. Tap dancing is the middle ground with balanced younger and teenage learners with over 400 learners from each age group.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You cover both charts and provide a clear overview: private studios account for the largest share, while college-based studios are least used, and the age groups show contrasting preferences. The figures you select are generally accurate, including 48%, 10%, and the ballet and modern comparisons. Your account of tap as a “middle ground” is also supported by the similar totals, although the age-group figures are not exactly balanced (450 versus 420). The overview’s claim that the “other half” is in community or school halls is a useful broad summary, but it overlooks that college-based studios make up part of the remainder. To strengthen an already well-supported response, make the overview more precise and compare the key totals across both age groups, rather than relying on broad descriptions such as “most” or “majority.”

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the location and dance-type data. This gives the reader a clear progression, and contrasts such as “On one hand” and “On the other hand” help signal the shift between age-group preferences. The information within each paragraph is also mostly sequenced logically. Some linking is slightly mechanical, however, and the repeated contrast formula does not always express the relationship precisely. For example, “Tap dancing is the middle ground” would connect more clearly to the preceding comparisons if you explicitly stated that the age-group totals are similar. Improve cohesion by using a wider range of concise comparisons and by ensuring each transition reflects the exact relationship between the figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing charts, including “proportion,” “dominate,” “least popular,” and “more common.” These choices help communicate the main patterns, and the meaning remains clear despite some imprecise or unnatural expressions. For instance, “dance ground” is not an appropriate collocation for the locations, and “most learnt dance type” sounds less natural than a phrase describing participation or popularity. “Practices” is also repeated where “classes” or “lessons” would be more suitable. There are spelling and form slips, including “differnt” and “australia,” as well as inconsistent capitalisation. Aim for precise chart vocabulary and check spelling and collocations; this would make the description more fluent and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and a sentence beginning “although.” Most ideas are understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the comparisons. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. In the opening, “different location” needs a plural noun, and “the number of student” should also be plural. The phrase “the other half in different community/school halls” is an incomplete construction, while “the most popular option” follows an awkward sentence structure in the location paragraph. Punctuation spacing is inconsistent, and the sentence joining “classes. On the other hand” needs a space after the full stop. Review plural agreement, sentence completeness, and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
