IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart below shows where young Australian poeple attend dance classes and the types of dance classes they take, devideed into two age groups.

Overall, private studios are more famous location for attending dance classes. On the other hand college-based studios have the least participation. In terms of dance styles ballet is most popular under 11, where modern dance is popular among 11-16 age range.

Regarding the location of the classes, almost half of the students (48%) attend lessopns in privet studios. School halls are the second highest segment with 24%. Although community hall and other are also in 18%. while least participation came from college-base studios (10%).

Looking into the type of dance classes of different age groups ballet has the highest participation among all the segment with 600+ particepants under the age of 11 but compared with the age range of 11-16 it is quite higher for the under age students. Tap dancing shows a more balanced distribution in both segmets attracting around 450 in under 11 and 450 in 11-16. In contrast, modern dance is significantly more popular among teenagers, with just over 500 participants aged 11–16, compared with roughly 300 students in the younger age group.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers both charts and gives a clear overview: private studios are identified as the leading location, college-based studios as the least used, and the age-group contrast between ballet and modern is noted. Most location figures are reported accurately, and the comparisons for ballet and modern reflect the chart. The main factual weakness is tap: the 11–16 figure is about 420, not 450, so the claim that both groups have around 450 is imprecise. Also, “ballet is most popular under 11” is accurate, but the overview could more clearly state that tap is the most popular style among 11–16-year-olds. This is a relevant, well-supported summary, though some key comparisons and details are not fully precise or developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a sensible overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on locations, and a paragraph comparing dance styles. This makes the information easy to follow, and transitions such as “Regarding” and “In contrast” help signal shifts and comparisons. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear. The location paragraph’s “Although community hall and other are also in 18%. while least participation…” is not smoothly connected, and the final paragraph moves through styles without consistently organising the comparisons in a clear sequence. Use complete, linked sentences and group the age-group comparisons more deliberately—for example, compare ballet, tap, and modern in turn. This would make the progression more controlled and reduce abrupt transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

There is enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main information, including “participation,” “distribution,” “age range,” and “significantly more popular.” Some attempts at varied phrasing are useful, but inaccurate spelling and word choice are noticeable: “poeple,” “devideed,” “lessopns,” “privet,” and “particepants” reduce the overall precision. A few expressions are also unnatural for chart description, such as “more famous location” and “the second highest segment.” Prefer conventional collocations such as “most popular venue” and “the second-largest share.” “Ballet has the highest participation among all the segment” is also imprecise when comparing styles across both age groups. More accurate spelling and natural, data-focused phrasing would strengthen the vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including contrast clauses such as “Although…” and “In contrast…,” and most of the meaning remains clear. However, some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Although community hall and other are also in 18%. while least participation came…” is an incomplete and poorly punctuated construction; “ballet has the highest participation among all the segment” has an agreement error; and “compared with the age range of 11–16 it is quite higher” has an unclear comparison structure. Capitalisation after full stops is also inconsistent. Aim for complete sentences, check singular/plural agreement, and make comparisons explicit—for example, “Ballet participation among under-11s is twice that of the older group.”
