IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie chart illustrate four different locations of dance classes for young people in a town in Australia today, while the bar chart compares the number of students attending on three types of dance classes by age group.
Overall, private studios were the most popular location for dance classes and other three locations only shared almost half of the proportion. Meanwhile, ballet dance was more relevant to young people aged under 11, whereas modern dance was most common to students aged 11 to 16.
Dance classes were usually situated on four different locations, including private studios, school halls, college based studios and community halls and other. Private studios were the most picked location, covering around 48% of dance classes in the whole town, followed by school halls, which accounted for 24%. By contrast, community halls and other represented only 18%, while college-based studios comprised the smallest proportion, at 10%.
With regard to type of dance classes, around 600 students aged under 11 were attending the ballet dance, making it the most popular in their age group. This figure is followed by tap dance, with roughly 450 participants and modern dance as the least common, at only 300 students. Meanwhile, this was completely the opposite on young people aged 11-16, where students are more interested in modern dance, with above 500 participants, succeeding by tap dance, at over 400. Ballet dance was the least common preference for students age 11 to 16, with only 300 participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response covers both charts and presents a clear overview of the main contrasts: private studios lead as a venue, while ballet is strongest among under-11s and modern among 11–16-year-olds. The location figures are reported accurately, and the comparisons across all three dance styles are supported with relevant approximate numbers. This gives the account a strong, well-supported focus. To make the overview more precise, avoid saying the other locations “only shared almost half”: together they account for 52%, slightly more than half. The age-group overview could also state the key reversal in tap more explicitly: it is marginally higher among under-11s than 11–16s. These are small opportunities to sharpen an otherwise well-selected summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The four-paragraph structure is effective: an introduction is followed by an overview and then separate descriptions of the two charts. Information is generally sequenced logically, and comparisons such as “By contrast” help distinguish the smaller venue shares. The response also moves clearly from the under-11 figures to the older group. However, some linking is mechanical or imprecise. “This figure is followed by tap dance” is an awkward transition, and “Meanwhile, this was completely the opposite” does not clearly identify which comparison is being reversed. Use more direct links, such as “Among older students, the pattern differed,” and make references explicit. This would preserve the clear overall organisation while making cohesion more flexible and natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
There is adequate range for describing charts, including “accounted for,” “comprised,” “participants,” and “most common.” These choices help communicate proportions and rankings, and the meaning remains clear throughout. Some collocations and word choices are less natural, however: “more relevant to young people” is not the right way to describe popularity, “picked location” is informal, and “succeeding by tap dance” does not express the ranking accurately. Repetition of “dance” and “students” also limits flexibility. Aim for precise chart language such as “most popular among,” “the leading venue,” and “followed by.” More consistent, natural collocations would strengthen the vocabulary without requiring unnecessarily complex wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including a contrast clause beginning “while” and several relative clauses, and the message is consistently understandable. Some grammatical errors remain. The opening should be “The pie chart illustrates,” with subject–verb agreement; “situated on four different locations” needs the preposition “in”; and “the opposite on young people” has an incorrect grammatical pattern. There are also tense shifts in the final paragraph (“students are more interested” after past-tense descriptions) and an awkward construction in “the most common preference for students age 11 to 16.” Keep the reporting tense consistent and check agreement, prepositions, and sentence patterns. Greater accuracy across these structures would make the range more controlled.
