IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart illustrates the location of dance classes in an Australian town. However the table below demonstrates the variety of dance classes.

The pie chart compares the major locations with some least used ones. We can clearly see that the major portion is of private studios which is used by 48% of people taking dance classes. The remainig 52% is divided in three categories out which school halls were slightly more used then community halls and others. The school halls were used 6% more than the community halls. The least used location was college-based studios which covers just 10% of total location used by people for dance classes.

However the given table illustrates the types of dance classes by showing the number of participants in each class. The most liked dance type for kids under 11 were ballet and tap dance classes with almost 650 . Although for kids from 11-16 modern dance was more likeable because in modern classes there were 500 kids whose age range is from 11-16.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You cover both visuals and identify some relevant features, including private studios as the largest location category and college-based studios as the smallest. However, the account of the dance types is incomplete and includes inaccurate or unclear reporting: under-11 ballet is about 600, not “almost 650,” and the response does not compare all three styles across both age groups. Tap is not one of the two leading classes for the younger group; ballet is highest, while tap and modern are lower. The overview is also limited: it would be stronger to summarise the main contrast that younger students favour ballet, whereas older students favour modern. Select the key comparisons accurately and support them with the chart’s approximate figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the two visuals, discusses locations first, and then moves to dance types. This makes the broad progression easy to follow. Linking words such as “However” and “Although” show an attempt to connect ideas, but “However” is used where the second sentence simply introduces another visual, so the relationship is not clear. Some references are also vague, particularly “the major portion” and “the remainig 52%,” which make the categories being discussed less precise. Use a clear overview paragraph, then group related comparisons together, and use connectors that accurately express contrast or addition. This would make the organisation more purposeful and the comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “participants,” “categories,” “private studios,” and “college-based studios,” so the topic is generally clear. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural, such as “major portion,” “least used ones,” and “more likeable” for describing class popularity. There are also spelling errors, including “remainig,” and the phrase “covers just 10% of total location used” is awkward. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for standard chart language such as “accounted for,” “the most popular,” and “the remaining share,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example, “Although for kids from 11-16 modern dance was more likeable because…” This shows some range, and the main meaning is usually understandable. However, there are several errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. In “The most liked dance type … were ballet and tap dance classes,” the singular subject does not agree with “were,” and the sentence’s meaning is also structurally unclear. “The school halls were used 6% more than the community halls” needs a clearer comparison structure, while “there were 500 kids whose age range is…” shifts tense and uses an awkward clause. Use accurate subject–verb agreement and simpler, controlled comparison sentences before adding subordinate clauses.
