Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main location pattern accurately: private studios are the largest share at 48%, while college-based studios are the smallest at 10%, and you report the other location percentages correctly. You also compare age groups across the dance styles. However, several figures in the bar chart are misreported: for example, under-11 modern is about 300, not 510, and 11–16 modern is about 520, not a “greater amount” than 510 in the way stated. Under-11 ballet and tap are also slightly overstated. The overview focuses only on locations and does not summarise the contrasting age-group patterns, such as younger students favouring ballet while older students favour modern. Covering these key features more accurately and clearly would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an opening and overview are followed by location details and then comparisons of dance types. This makes the information reasonably easy to follow. However, the overview repeats the same location comparison that is then given again in the next paragraph, while the age-group chart receives no comparable summary. Some linking and referencing are also awkward, particularly “The comparison of types of dance classes by reference to age in Ballet,” which makes the transition unclear. Organise the body around the two charts and use direct comparisons within each dance style; this would create a more balanced progression and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “students,” and “comparison,” and the reader can generally understand the intended information. However, several word choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task. “Dance lectures” does not describe classes, “data provided on the avenue” is unclear, and “currently being adopted” is not an appropriate way to describe attendance. “Join them” is also less precise than saying students take or attend ballet classes. Repeated use of “the percentage of” and “the number of students” limits flexibility. Choose standard terms for chart descriptions and vary them carefully, while ensuring that alternatives preserve the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

Your response uses mostly simple sentence patterns, with some attempts to combine information, and the main points are usually understandable. There are, however, some errors in sentence construction and grammatical form. The opening phrase “The pie chart illustrates the proportion of data provided…” is difficult to follow, and “The comparison of types of dance classes by reference to age in Ballet” is not a complete, natural construction. In “The number of students in modern under 11 is about 510, and the number aged 11-16 is a greater amount,” the comparison is grammatically awkward and the second clause lacks a clear parallel structure. Use straightforward comparative sentences, such as “More under-11s take ballet, whereas more 11–16-year-olds take modern,” and check articles, hyphenation, and punctuation.
