Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies both chart topics and mentions several relevant categories, but it does not provide a clear, accurate summary of the main features. Some figures are misreported: college-based studios account for 10%, not 48%; under-11 ballet is about 600 students, not 6,000; and under-11 tap is about 450, not 600. It also confuses age groups and dance styles in places, such as saying 300 pupils aged 11–16 learned ballet when describing tap. There is no clear overview of the main contrasts, such as private studios being the most common location or modern dance being more popular among older students. The response is also four words below the 150-word minimum; the 17 words copied from the prompt were excluded.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response makes an attempt to group information by chart and uses linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “whereas,” and “meanwhile.” However, the ideas do not progress in a clear order, and the figures and categories become difficult to follow. For example, the sentence beginning “The second category is tap dancing” shifts between age groups and then refers to ballet, making the comparison unclear. Repeated phrases such as “meanwhile on the other hand” add length without clarifying relationships. Organise the response into a brief overview followed by separate, logically ordered comparisons for location and dance type, and use each linking word only where it expresses a precise contrast.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses enough basic vocabulary to name the chart categories, including “community halls,” “private studios,” “ballet,” and “modern.” However, the range is limited and several choices are repetitive or unsuitable for describing chart data. Calling the learners “citizens” is imprecise, while “learned ballet dancing” and “pupils learnt ballet dancing” are awkward collocations. Repeated use of “whereas” and “meanwhile” also limits flexibility. Use concise reporting language and vary terms appropriately, for example, “the proportion attending,” “the number of students,” and “was more popular among.” Check spelling and consistent forms, including “Australia” and “college-based,” to make the report more polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There are attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, but the response relies heavily on run-on structures joined by “whereas” and “meanwhile,” and these are often difficult to parse. For instance, “Firstly, community halls and other are 18% whereas school halls are 24% meanwhile private studios is 48%” contains problems with agreement and sentence boundaries. The sentence about tap also shifts between age groups without a clear grammatical structure. Use shorter, controlled sentences and ensure each comparison has a clear subject and verb, such as “Private studios account for 48%, compared with 24% for school halls.” Accurate punctuation and agreement would make the information easier to understand.
