Student answer (Band 6.0)
The chart illustrates the location of dance classes while the table shows the categories of dance classes by different age group who are currently attending in a town in Australia.
Overall, in the pie chart, most people have been choosed the private studios as their dance location while in the table, the highest number of people showed the ballet types of dance as their class.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover both visuals and include several relevant figures, such as 48% for private studios and the age-group figures for ballet and tap. However, the overview is not fully accurate: ballet is not the most popular class overall, since the chart shows 820 students in tap, compared with 900 in ballet? More importantly, the largest single age-group figure is under-11 ballet, while the overall pattern differs by age: younger students favour ballet and older students favour modern. Your final sentence appears to reverse the modern figures, reporting about 510 for ages 11–16 and 300 for under-11, which is correct, but the overview misses this key contrast. Develop the main comparisons and avoid unsupported claims such as “most people” where the chart gives proportions of class locations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the location chart and dance types. This makes the two visuals easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “However” and “Finally” help signal progression. The organisation is coherent, though the overview’s claim that ballet is the highest category does not prepare the reader for the age-based contrasts that follow. Within the final paragraph, “although” and “but” create awkward or unclear relationships between the figures, and repeated “In the pie chart” / “In the table” framing is somewhat mechanical. To strengthen progression, group the age comparisons by pattern—for example, younger students’ preferences first, then older students’—and use clearer contrast markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough task-related vocabulary to identify the visuals and categories, including “private studios,” “school halls,” “ballet,” and “tap.” There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “significant figure” and “approximately.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “have been choosed” and “have choosed” misuse the verb form, while “showed their location” does not naturally describe a percentage. “A typical proportion” is also unclear, and “ballet types of dance” is unnecessarily wordy. Aim for precise chart language and natural collocations, such as “accounted for,” “represented,” and “the number of students taking.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “while,” “although,” and “which,” and the main information is generally understandable. However, errors recur in verb forms and sentence construction. For example, “people have been choosed” and “people have choosed” should use the correct past participle, while “the highest number of people showed the ballet types” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the subject and action. In the final paragraph, “although 300 people are doing the same category but” combines contrasting structures incorrectly. There are also inconsistent tense choices between “are doing,” “showed,” and “have selected.” Use straightforward present-tense reporting patterns consistently, then check clause connections and punctuation.
