Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify both charts and report several key figures accurately, including private studios at 48%, college-based studios at 10%, and the ballet and tap figures for both age groups. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: saying that children are “highest in ballet after that slowly down” does not capture the contrasting patterns, since under-11s favour ballet while 11–16-year-olds have the highest figure for modern. The modern comparison is also left without the older group’s approximate value of 520, and the tap figure of about 410 is slightly low. The response contains 136 words, below the required 150; the 12 words copied from the prompt are excluded. Add a clearer overview and develop the main comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic, useful structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for location and dance types. This helps the reader distinguish the two sets of information. However, progression within the paragraphs is limited, and repeated wording such as “highest,” “compare to,” and “after that” makes the account sound mechanical. The final paragraph also moves through ballet, tap and modern without clearly highlighting the main contrast between age groups. Use more precise links, such as “whereas” and “by contrast,” and organise the figures around comparisons rather than listing them. Clearer referencing and a more developed overview would make the information easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “location,” “accounts for,” “age group,” and “around,” so the reader can generally understand what is being compared. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation and spelling errors are noticeable: “pic charts,” “porprotion,” “classes dance,” and “community cover” are not natural or accurate expressions. Repetition of “highest” and “compare to” also reduces precision. Aim to use standard chart language consistently, for example “the proportion of classes held at…” and “the number of students taking…”. Check spelling and word forms carefully, as these errors sometimes make the intended meaning less clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences, including the overview beginning “Overall” and the comparison introduced by “Although,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in sentence structure and agreement appear in phrases such as “private studios highest proportion” and “under 11 age group was highest,” where articles and a clear grammatical subject are needed. The final sentence beginning “Although” is not a complete, well-formed comparison, and several clauses are joined awkwardly. Most sentences rely on simple patterns, so the range is limited. Practise building accurate comparison sentences, such as “The figure for under-11s was higher than that for 11–16-year-olds in ballet,” and check articles, plurals and verb forms.
