IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart describes the location of dance classes and the bar chart illustrates the preference of student's dance type on the basis of their age groups.

Overall, the dance classes are mostly held in private studios covering the highest percentage while the lowest number of classes were taken by the students in college-based studios. Students, under 11, were more interested in Ballet dance and students, aged 11-16, were mostly seen interested in Modern dance. In contrast the former group showed the lowest interest in Modern dance and the later group of students took lowest classes in Ballet.

Most of the dance classes are held in Private studios covering a largest number of 48%. 24% classes were taken place in School halls, after school time. In addition, Community hall showed the data of 18% dancer students while the lowest proportion of students were managed to take dance classes in College-based studios holding mere 10%.

Furthermore, 600 students who were under eleven, chose Ballet. Approximately 450 were interested in Tap and 300 preferred Modern dance presenting the lowest number. On the other side, age group (11-16), the highest proportion of students was recorded in Modern dance representing above 500 which was lower than under elleven age group. Lastly,Tap classes were taken by more than 400 students and 300 students were interested in Ballet dance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers both charts and gives a clear overview of the main patterns: private studios account for the largest share, college-based studios the smallest, and the preferred dance style differs by age group. The figures reported are broadly consistent with the chart, including 48%, 24%, 18% and 10%, and the student totals are represented accurately. Comparisons such as younger students’ stronger preference for ballet and older students’ preference for modern are relevant and supported with figures. However, the overview’s claim that the older group’s modern figure was “lower than under eleven age group” is unclear and misleading: the younger group’s modern figure is about 300, compared with just over 500 for the older group. Make this comparison explicit and avoid imprecise statements so the key features are consistently clear and well supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the location and age-group data. This gives the reader a clear progression from the broad patterns to supporting figures. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “On the other side” help signal shifts between points, and the comparisons are generally easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however: “On the other side” is an awkward transition, while “which was lower than under eleven age group” makes the comparison difficult to interpret. The location paragraph also repeats the idea that private studios have the largest share. Use more precise referencing and transitions, and ensure each sentence adds a distinct comparison, to make the progression more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for describing charts, with useful terms such as “highest percentage,” “lowest proportion,” “approximately,” and “representing.” The writer also uses relevant category names and varies some descriptions of student numbers. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, including “preference of student's dance type,” “classes were taken place,” and “students were managed to take dance classes.” “The later group” is also an inaccurate choice when referring to the older age group, and “covering a largest number” does not fit a percentage. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Prefer standard chart language such as “the proportion of classes held,” “students attended,” and “the older age group preferred.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while” and “which,” and most information remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “covering a largest number” needs an article and a more suitable noun phrase, while “24% classes were taken place” has an incorrect passive construction. In “the highest proportion of students was recorded in Modern dance,” the structure is awkward and the subject does not clearly match the intended meaning. Punctuation is also inconsistent, as in “Lastly,Tap.” Aim for direct, controlled constructions—for example, “Twenty-four per cent of classes were held in school halls”—and check articles, verb forms, and spacing around punctuation.
