IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart gives the proportion of different locations where the dance classes are helding in Astralia.

Overall, it gives the information about highest in use place which are private studios meanwhile the lowest locations that are in use are College based studios. Besides this, there is also type of dance in which students are enrolled and the maximum number of pupils is 600 under the age of 11 and they choose Ballet dance while the minimum number touches the figure 300 in both Ballet and modern dance which also depends on their ages.

If we deeply compare the pie chart proportions then we have large and least used locations. Starting from the upmost place is private studios which take 48% from overall and right after that we have School halls which contain 24% and then we have halls and other places which consumed 18% of the proportion and the smallest number is 10% which consist of college based studios.

Furthermore, by giving details of different types of dance we also have the age groups. Most children that participate in dance are under 11 and they mostly preffer the Ballet dance and the number is around 600 while those who are between 11-16 enrolled in ballet dance, just reached the number 300. Moreover, the second type of dance in which again the under 11 are more than the other ones crossed the number 450 while 11-16 were again lesser than them. Thirdly, modern dance in which the 11-16 have a large number in enrollments and it is around 510 but on the other hand we have children under 11 who just reached to 300. Overall, the under 11 students were more than 11-16 age group.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both charts and identify several key features accurately: private studios are the largest location category at 48%, college-based studios are the smallest at 10%, and under-11s lead in ballet while 11–16-year-olds lead in modern. You also include relevant figures for each dance style. However, the overview is not fully clear: the claim that under-11s are the most numerous overall is not supported by the chart totals, since the older group has slightly more students across the three styles. The statement that 300 is the minimum in both ballet and modern is also inaccurate; 300 applies to older students in ballet and younger students in modern. A clearer overview and more precise comparisons would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on locations, and a paragraph on dance types. This helps the reader follow the two chart topics. However, progression within the overview is sometimes unclear, particularly in the sentence beginning “Besides this,” which combines the age-group comparison with an inaccurate claim about the minimum figure. Linking phrases such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “Thirdly” provide connections, but their repeated use makes the writing feel somewhat mechanical, and “the second type” is not immediately clear as a reference to tap. Grouping the dance figures by age group or by style, and using clearer references, would improve the flow and make comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “enrolled,” “participate,” and “enrollments,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “highest in use place,” “take 48% from overall,” and “crossed the number 450.” “Helding” and “preffer” are also spelling or word-form errors, while “Astralia” is an inaccurate spelling of Australia. Repeated use of “number,” “place,” and “dance” limits precision. Aim for standard chart language such as “accounted for,” “stood at,” and “the figure for,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while,” “which,” and “although”-type contrasts, and the main meaning is usually recoverable. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “the dance classes are helding” uses an incorrect verb form, and “the maximum number of pupils is 600 under the age of 11 and they choose Ballet” has an awkward, poorly controlled clause structure. There are also issues with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in “the smallest number is 10% which consist of college based studios.” Punctuation is inconsistent, including extra spacing before punctuation. Use shorter, controlled comparisons and check verb forms, agreement, and clause construction.
