Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover both charts and give a clear overview: private studios account for the largest share, college-based studios the smallest, and the age groups show different preferences across dance styles. The figures you report are consistent with the chart, including the 48%, 10%, 24% and 18% location shares and the approximate student totals. Your comparisons are relevant, especially the contrast between ballet among under-11s and modern among 11–16-year-olds. To make the summary more fully developed, state the key age-group pattern more precisely: ballet leads for under-11s, whereas modern leads for older students, with tap figures relatively close between the groups. Avoid the broad claim that ballet is popular “among all three types,” which is unclear and does not accurately express the comparison.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the pie and bar charts. This makes the information easy to follow, and signposts such as “Looking at the pie chart” and “In contrast” help distinguish the comparisons. The overview also gives the reader a useful summary before the details. Some linking is mechanical, however, because both detail paragraphs begin with the same phrase. In addition, the sentence beginning “Overall” contains several ideas joined with punctuation that interrupts the flow, and “Whereas” is left as a fragment. Improve cohesion by combining related comparisons into complete sentences and varying transitions, for example by moving directly from the largest location share to the smallest.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-relevant vocabulary, including “account,” “proportion,” “popular,” “respectively,” and “in contrast.” These choices allow you to describe shares and compare the age groups, and the chart categories are generally named accurately. Some word combinations and forms are imprecise, such as “types of dance classes prefer” and “shows lowest interest”; these make parts of the report sound less natural, even though the intended meaning is usually clear. Repeated use of “popular” also limits flexibility. Aim for precise reporting language such as “accounted for,” “had the highest enrolment,” or “was the leading style,” while keeping the chart’s measured quantity—student numbers or location shares—clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex structures, including a contrast with “while” and a comparison introduced by “In contrast.” The main figures and relationships remain understandable. However, some errors in agreement, sentence construction, articles, and punctuation reduce accuracy. For example, “Private studios is” should use a plural verb, while “Whereas college-based studios shows lowest interest” is an incomplete clause and has agreement and article problems. The opening sentence also lacks a grammatical link in “types of dance classes prefer,” and “Ballet is more popular type … are around 600 students” combines incompatible structures. Build complete sentences around one clear subject and verb, and check singular/plural agreement and sentence boundaries.
